TAPER ROLLER BEARING ADJUSTMENT

Once the front plastic cover is removed there is easy access to the adjustment nuts. Rotate spindle to locate lock tab that is bent into a slot in the top nut and bend tab out of slot. The threads are left hand. My preload was quite satisfactory, I just wanted to adjust it towards the upper limit of preload. I did just a hand feel test of preload, so one has to use ones own judgment here. It is not to be loose nor too tight but somewhere in between. As I have adjusted mine to be on the upperlimit of preload I am accepting the possibility of reduced bearing life, though I don't consider that I have the bearings tight enough to adversly affect bearing life or anything else.

Although the grease was nice and clean and oily enough I just dropped a few drops of heavy gearbox oil around the bearing and pushed some of the grease from around the top back into the bearing, job finished.
