Hourglass, 2001
Photographic
Sculpture
wood, cotton
threads, acrylic paint, black and white photographs
Hourglass is a
sculpture piece utilising photo-media elements.
The work consists
of a solid black wooden skeleton and various small black and white
photographs suspended in an hourglass shape by cotton threads within the
structure.
As suggested by
the overall hourglass appearance the work presents a model of a memory house.
The images representing one’s memories are being stored in two parts, a
black and white one and a colour one. With the passage of time memories lose
their vividness, but in the process of travelling back in time (symbolised by
turning the hourglass so that the black and white part is on top and the
colour one on the bottom) old memories are being retrieved and thus brought
to life again, regaining their colour.
