ABOUT US
Majellan Singers is an
ensemble of 12 to 16 female singers that was formed in 1990 by a group of women who share their
love of singing. It is named
after St. Gerard Majella, the patron saint of mothers. The group
performs a wide variety of music; including motets, madrigals, folk
and folk-derived music, spirituals, mass settings in both Latin and
English, jazz, sacred songs, pop songs & Christmas carols. Their varied
repertoire of sacred and secular music from the 16th to
the 20th century is occasionally performed accompanied, but
the group often performs “a capella".
Majellan Singers is available for weddings, concerts, private engagements, funerals and
celebrations.

Performances |
Performance format varies. We arrange concerts of our own, or sometimes jointly with other artists, including mixed voice groups. We often sing by invitation in events, festivals or entertainment forums organised by others, also at weddings and occasionally funerals. Accompaniment, when required, is usually by piano or organ.

Members |
We are a women’s group, aged mainly in the 30s to 40s. Some of us have professional musical backgrounds, whilst others are not as experienced, but we are all learning. Since the group’s inception a low membership turnover has maintained our identity and given a stable base for the development of group skills. |

|
Organisation |
The ensemble has been organised and run informally, with decisions often made in discussion after rehearsal. In 2004 we plan to formalise our legal entity to some extent. This will formalise our structure a little more. Come concert-time, everyone (including family) is happy to contribute, and the jobs are easily managed by sharing.

Auditions |
Auditions are held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday evening by appointment, before our normal rehearsals, and can be arranged through any member of Majellan or by phoning Lisa 9878 9355. Please prepare a simple song, so we can hear your voice
& expect to perform some aural tests & sightreading. Potential new members are asked to be on probation for 2 rehearsals to confirm that we can all work together.
