Introduction to the paper wasp web site
This web site is associated with the paper wasp print magazine, which is published quarterly. It is devoted to the Japanese verse forms: haiku, senryu, renga, haibun and tanka. For details of our contests, to see samples of haiku we have published, or to find out how to subscribe or contribute, click on the buttons in the panel above.
The paper wasp magazine
The print version of paper wasp publishes haiku, senryu, renga and tanka in a range of fresh tones and voices. We acknowledge a range of forms and styles from one liners to the conventional 5-7-5 form, and variations such as development or neglect of seasonal words for regional contexts. While retaining its antipodean flavour, paper wasp is now truly an international journal of haiku. Our subscription list extends from Australia and New Zealand across the English-speaking world to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, as well as parts of Europe. paper wasp also continues to maintain a close connection with a number of distinguished Japanese haijin. We look forward to upholding and extending the haiku spirit to a larger audience.
As part of that intent, we launched a contest for the paper wasp Jack Stamm Haiku Award.
During 2006, the contest was run for the eighth time. The winning haiku
will be found on the 'Selected Haiku' page.
Another paper wasp anthology will be published from the entries to this contest.
Another initiative is this Web Site, featuring some of the best of our haiku across the years.
