Freshwater Festival

Swimmers will be allowed back into the water at Lake Parramatta for the first time in over 35 years on Sunday 3 December after Parramatta City Council decided to allow public swimming in the lake during special club and event managed days.

The Freshwater Festival hosted by the Council and the Upper Parramatta River Catchment Trust will be held on the day and feature public swimming opportunities, water activities, healthy outdoor living ideas and an attempt to break the Guinness World record for totem tennis.

“In the 30s and 40s Lake Parramatta was as popular as Coogee on a hot summer’s day. We are in the process of recreating that history for a whole new generation,” Parramatta City Lord Mayor Cr David Borger said.

“There aren’t a lot of freshwater swimming holes left in Sydney after years of misuse and pollution and it is remarkable that we have managed to bring a decaying lake back to life, however that also brings a level of responsibility to ensure the lake remains healthy which is one of the reasons Council has decided to only allow swimming on special event days for now.”

The free festival will feature:

  • ·an open water swimming race (for competitive swimmers only), hosted by Parramatta City Swim Club and supported by NSW Swimming from 10am till 12pm

  •  public swimming from 1pm till 3pm, supervised by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia

  •  the Totem Tennis World Record attempt from 3pm

  •  rides and live entertainment, native wildlife shows, radio yacht racing, canoe tours, food stalls and guided walks

  •  displays, demonstrations and activities about outdoor recreation and safety, environmental practices and historical reflections

As a community event the Festival is supported by various community organisations including the local Loins Club, Scouts and Rotary Club who will all contribute to the events on the day.

Lake Parramatta has a rich history as a premier swimming venue with the largest inland freshwater lifesaving club in Australia and was a popular regional swimming venue from early last century through to the 1970s. During the 1980s pollution from urban run off and sewerage contamination meant the Council had to discourage swimming in the lake. Since that time, Parramatta City Council has been working with the Upper Parramatta River Catchment Trust (UPRCT) and Baulkham Hills Shire Council to improve water quality in the lake. Last year the Council set up a technical working group to investigate re-opening the lake to swimmers, following a number of detailed studies funded by the Catchment Trust.

The entrance to Lake Parramatta is located off Lackey Street, North Parramatta, and parking will be available on the day.
