Swimmers will
be allowed back into the water at Lake Parramatta for the first time in over
35 years on Sunday 3 December after Parramatta City Council decided to allow
public swimming in the lake during special club and event managed days.
The
Freshwater Festival hosted by the Council and the Upper Parramatta River
Catchment Trust will be held on the day and feature public swimming
opportunities, water activities, healthy outdoor living ideas and an attempt
to break the Guinness World record for totem tennis.
“In the 30s
and 40s Lake Parramatta was as popular as Coogee on a hot summer’s day. We
are in the process of recreating that history for a whole new generation,”
Parramatta City Lord Mayor Cr David Borger said.
“There aren’t
a lot of freshwater swimming holes left in Sydney after years of misuse and
pollution and it is remarkable that we have managed to bring a decaying lake
back to life, however that also brings a level of responsibility to ensure
the lake remains healthy which is one of the reasons Council has decided to
only allow swimming on special event days for now.”
