The Deep End
From this vantage point you can
look down into the deep end of the 1936 Olympic-sized pool, and appreciate the
original decorative tiling and underwater lighting. Lane numbers are marked in
roman numerals, and along the sides handcrafted ceramic plaques indicate the
depth in imperial measurements.
This northern end of the pool
originally featured a floodlit steel diving tower, with diving boards at three,
five and ten metres, as well as a novelty water slide in the early years. The
pool originally sloped down at the northern end to a maximum depth of about five
metres. This space now contains the pool’s plant and equipment.
