This is a project I sent to Somerset Studio for their gorgeous "Alice in Wonderland" issue (Jul-Aug 2003). Unforunately it seems to have been lost in the post - they didn't seem to get it and I haven't got it back.
So, here it is, published for my enjoyment and yours.
It was an odd project. I was determined to make something "really great", since we are a household of Alice fans. My husband has ... hmmm, we've lost count of how many copies of the books. A lot. Here's his web site, Faces of Alice, where he explores the ways different illustrators tackle the problem of how Alice herself should look.
I tinkered for ages on something totally different that was never going to happen (it involved a piece of doll's furniture!), and made this as the deadline approached. I went through hating it, and thinking it was a total dud, and compensated by adding more layers. Strangely, when I put the layers together, I rather liked it.
So here I present, "The Whiting, The Crow, and Alice's Right Foot", a celebration of some of the lesser known characters from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There".
