The Mars Book

I created this book as a celebration of my Father-in-law's birthday - it was a little birthday card! We gave him a telescope specially to look at Mars, which was about to be really close, and all the other great stuff in the sky.

The reason I'm showing this book here is that I made some use of punches, and had a great time doing it. It's a concertina book. The inside is made of a sheet of black paper laid over a sheet of silver. The black has stars punched out of it at randon, and also tiny circles (the little stars!). The silver paper is cut a little shorter than the black, to get that interesting layered effect.

The front has a circle punched out of some paper I painted with red and orange papers, using a credit card technique. The result (on this piece, anyway) looked very "Marsy" to me. I learned this painting idea from Danielle (here's a link to some of her stuff).

Hope you like the Mars book - and I hope it's an idea starter for you!
