This page lists Australian links for the Deaf and hearing impaired community, and the people who support this community.  I compiled it because there are very few sites which provide a comprehensive list of Australian resources - although there are lots of sites with a few links. My personal interest is that I'm hearing impaired, and so are two of my boys.

This list indicates just how much information really is out there for Australia. This site will grow, because as I add links I find more I need to add. All the links at the time of publishing work ok. If you find any broken links, or if you have suggestions for additions or corrections, please let me know by sending an e-mail to: paulr_aus@hotmail.com.

Please note that these links are for information only.  No endorsement or criticism of any person or organization is given or intended by any inclusion or omission or typographical errors.  In most cases, the descriptive text associated with each link is taken from the referenced web site itself, although there may have been some editing for this context.

  • TV and Movie Captioning Group established on ninemsn.  This group was established to provide a place for people to talk about Closed Captions and Open Captions in Australia, particularly in relation to Deaf and Hearing Impaired needs.  You'll need a Hotmail or ninemsn account to join this group (all free!) if you wish to contribute to discussions, however anyone on the Web can view the site without joining.

I was delighted to be given the Speechwoman of the Month award for my Deaflinks site, for July 2000. Hey, I'm not a Speechwoman, the award was conferred to me by Speechwoman.  Click on the logo above to see the details.  My site lived at another Web location when I won the award, but it moved here when I changed my Internet company.

  • Features
    • Hearing Loss in Children - This Radio National Health Report programme focuses on hearing loss in children. Early intervention is of vital importance in acquiring language skills. Also, some children have what is called auditory processing problems. This means that while they may have normal hearing, they cannot process the content of what's being said to them. Also, there are calls to screen the hearing of all newborn babies in Australia. (Monday 10 July 2000)

  • Quotes:
    • When I was young, I was put in a school for retarded kids for two years before they realized I actually had a hearing loss... and they called ME slow!
