Coming to terms with hearing loss has been the most difficult task of my life. It need not have been quite so hard. But even today there is little good writing about the experience of losing hearing and coping with tinnitus. My columns called Shirley's View deal with the everyday problems of hearing loss: some of them are triumphant, some of them funny, but I never underrate a life-changing experience that involves grief.
