Good commanders and agents. Two artifacts. This can be a nice position to play if you don't mind a lot of diplomacy. Despite your strategic position in the endgame, you can stand above the initial fighting. Your FP and DS neighbors will have their hands full with other problems so they will leave you alone while you build up your initial strength.

The nation of the Dunlendings encompasses the large region south of the former realm of Arnor in central Eriador. Consisting of several cooperating clans, loosely led by Enion, the Dunlendings seek to be reunited and restored to the lands of their forefathers. Those lands include the unclaimed lands south of Dunland and include the sites of what are now only abandoned ruins.

Possessing neither valorous nor skilled warriors, the armies of the Dunlendings rely primarily upon their charismatic leaders and sheer numbers to win the day. However, their forces are accustomed to fighting in all types of terrain (the rougher the better) and possess a wide variety of troops to suit their varied styles and expertise. Furthermore, the rugged nature of Dunland results in many of the Dunlending characters having a chance of possessing greater Challenge ranks.

While few of the Dunlendings aspire toward the arcane arts, the few Mages that have done so have reached considerable skill. Additionally, although they possess few Emissaries, the Agents and Commanders of the Dunlendings are adept at infiltration and espionage. Reflective of these skills, all Dunlending Agent and Command ranks are doubled for purposes of scouting/recon orders. Additionally, although only a few Agents survived the recent wars with Rohan, the spying traditions of the Dunlendings allow new Dunlending Agents to begin with an Agent rank of up to 40.

Surrounded by powerful adversaries, the Dunlendings have quietly reinforced their armies and plan to return to the days of old when their people were powerful and influential. Pursuant to this goal, the Dunlendings can explore the lands to the south, while paying close attention to their otherwise vulnerable borders. The presence of the strategic Old South Road in Dunland dictates focusing attention on the guarding of these exposed borders.

The greatest area of concern for the Dunlendings has been their long history of conflict after conflict. The Dunlendings have recently been involved in a military conflict with the upstart Riders of Rohan after they moved into territories formerly belonging to Dunland. Additionally, the Dunlendings are surrounded by other potential enemies - the Dwarves, the Dúnadan Rangers, the Noldor, the Witch-king - with only their new and suspicious neighbor, the White Wizard, yet unaligned. Furthermore, the nearby coastline offers an inviting haven for the powerful nations located in the south.

The Dunlending's best chance of staying neutral is to manipulate their neighbors into conflict, without involving themselves. Once attention is turned upon Dunland and war comes, the choice of allegiance becomes imminent.
