ME-PBM 1650 Nation DescriptionHaradwaith (#22)
The nation of the Haradwaith consists of the Northern Haradrim of Near Harad and the peoples who occupy the semi-arid lands south of Mordor, called Harondor, with their greatest settlements along the seacoast and rivers. Led by Haruth Ramam and Carlon, the Haradwaith regard the Belfalas area as their own, contesting rival navies for right of passage. The lands about Harondor provide bountiful resources and afford considerable protection from their powerful neighbors. The Haradan nation utilizes their strategic location and resources to thwart these foreign influences. This wealth of resources, and wise use of the market, may allow the Haradwaith to hire sizable armies. The local traditions of the region support a standing body of available mercenaries. Because of this mercenary tradition, new Haradwaith Men-at-Arms recruits start with a Training rank of 25 and new armies are hired at no cost. While their main strength lies in the military might of both their armies and particularly their navies, they possess individuals with skill in the arcane, as well as the more subtle, arts. Additionally, the Haradwaith's close ties with the caravan masters allow them to tap the vast store of information accumulated by these wandering traders. As a result, this allows any Haradwaith characters (regardless of skills) to use the Uncover Secrets order at a level at least equal to a rank 40 Emissary. Bitter hatred of Northern Gondor, the Dwarves, and the Noldor make them of particular interest. The diplomatic difficulties facing the Haradwaith are considerable. With powerful neighbors of all allegiances - the Long Rider, the Quiet Avenger, the Sindar, Southern Gondor, the Corsairs - the decision to choose allegiance must be carefully considered. Fortunately, the rugged traditions of the Haradwaith allow many of their characters to have a chance of possessing greater Challenge ranks. Solving problems in this fashion may avoid the repercussions of a military campaign. The greatest single strategic difficulty facing the Haradwaith is the split nature of their realm. Having settlements on both sides of the nearby major river valley means that sizeable defensive forces must be maintained both north and south of the river, or navies must be ready to transport troops when and wherever needed.
