ME-PBM 1650 Nation DescriptionLong Rider (#19)
Led by the Ninth of the Nazgûl, the Long Rider, the nation of Ûvatha controls one of the most extensive realms belonging to the Dark Servants. From his main fortress near the Sea of Rhûn, the Long Rider's minions infiltrate and pressure many of the peoples that inhabit Rhovanion and the region of Khand. The vast realm of Ûvatha is patrolled by the superior cavalry that serve as the bulwark of his armies. Because of the early and thorough emphasis on martial training, new Long Rider Commanders can begin with a Command rank of up to 40. Maintaining this mounted force is facilitated by the unusual ability of all Long Rider Mages to learn the lost Conjure Mounts spell. Although perhaps not as highly regarded as some riders, the mounted forces of the Long Rider are numerous, well-provisioned and quite capable of carrying out the planned expansion of the Long Rider's domain. Furthermore, the rich martial traditions of the indigenous peoples allows the Long Rider to recruit elite troops. Therefore, new Long Rider recruits start with a Training rank of 20 and Long Rider armies are able to Force March with no loss of Morale points. Additionally, the Long Rider possesses one of the few navies serving the Dark Lord. Having transports can facilitate movement around Rhûn and perhaps also along the Harondor coast. Careful use of his navies can secure safe footholds at strategic locations. The rich lands found in his realm provide a strong potential for this growth. The wide open plains of Rhovanion and eastern Mordor are quite inviting. In addition, the Long Rider strongholds are well-placed and well-secured. The hidden fortress at Tol Burûth, and the inaccessible Olbamarl, make a pair of strong anchors to his realm. From all of Ûvatha's holdings, he is able to regulate and protect critical regions around Mordor. Coordination with the other Dark Servant nations, namely the Cloud Lord, the Blind Sorcerer, the Quiet Avenger, and the Dragon Lord could be useful. However, the Long Rider nation is not without its difficulties. One difficulty facing Ûvatha is the split nature of his realm. Another is the control of the nearby roads, especially in Harondor, and Khand. The Long Rider also faces a large number of possible conflicts. The neighboring enemies include the Northmen, the Dwarves, the Éothraim, the Sindar, and Northern and Southern Gondor. Furthermore, possible enemies include the Easterlings and the Haradwaith. Ûvatha must consider in which regions he will concentrate his military and diplomatic efforts. Fortunately, Ûvatha possesses a few of the finest Agents in northwestern Middle-earth. These characters can frequently solve the Long Rider's problems by assassinating troublesome leaders or by relieving a difficult nation of some of its unguarded gold stores.
