ME-PBM 2950 Nation DescriptionSouthern Gondor (#7)
The numerous lands and fiefs of Southern Gondor are considered allied with their cousins to the north. However, a long history of internal strife has strained relations with Northern Gondor and many powerful Men within the nation ponder their own right to rule all of Gondor. The realm of Southern Gondor consists of the lands south of the White Mountains and north of Near Harad. Led by Prince Imrahil, the forces of Southern Gondor are not to be taken lightly. A formidable standing army, in terms of numbers, training, and provisions is almost always ready. These experienced Southern Gondor troops only lose 1-2 Morale points for a Forced March (2-5 points without food). Furthermore, new Southern Gondor troops start with a Training rank of 20. Many well-fortified towns dot a countryside rich in natural resources. Some of these settlements possess harbors and ports which help support one of the region's most powerful navies. Ships of Southern Gondor have been seen patrolling the sea regions south of Gondor and up the Anduin delta, and they provide considerable deterrent to the other major powers in the region. Many of the Dark Servant nations reside near the borders of Southern Gondor. However, little information has been available recently regarding troop movements in the Dark Lord's former realm. These enemies, along with the Quiet Avenger to the south, have drawn considerable attention to the eastern borders and have become an increasingly important element of the strategic plans of Southern Gondor. Also, several powerful potential enemies, primarily the Corsairs to the south, but also the Dunlendings and the White Wizard to the west, could present considerable concerns. The eventual allegiance of these nations could also dictate radically different plans for Southern Gondor and its two neighboring allies - Northern Gondor and the Sinda Elves. The Mages of Southern Gondor are very talented and exhibit the presence of Elvish blood mixed with that of their Dúnadan ancestors. Much influence can be attributed to the Sinda settlements that adjoin Southern Gondor lands. This history and inclination toward the arcane arts allows all new Southern Gondor Mages to have a starting Mage rank of up to 40. At the height of their power, the Dúnadan were known to produce many vast and wonderful works of construction. In fact, many of the roads and bridges found in western Middle-earth are legacies of these lost skills. However, the presence of the nearby Sindar helps ensure that some of these former skills still will remain. These skills, along with the wealth of resources found in Gondor, allow Southern Gondor to build and improve its fortifications at 1/2 the normal timber cost.
