The procedures described below are aimed at maintaining and improving your piano.

Action Regulation, Hammer Reshaping and Voicing | Cabinet Refinishing | Restringing | Action Restoration

Action Regulation, Hammer Reshaping and Voicing

ACTION REGULATION is a series of overall but fine adjustments to the moving parts of the piano action aimed at making the mechanical functioning more accurate and efficient.

HAMMER RESHAPING removes about 1 millimetre of grimy and aged felt from the striking surface of the hammers. The fresh felt exposed by this procedure eliminates a somewhat muffled sound and produces a much more beautiful tone.

-
Reshaping brings the hammer back to its original pear shape.
-
Reshaping eliminates grooves by removing grime and dust that has become embedded over time.

VOICING can improve the sound of a piano quite dramatically and is likely to have a significant impact on the performance of the piano.

-
This procedure aims at achieving a particular sound quality and consistency across all the notes.
-
Voicing can deliver a more mellow tone or, alternatively, a more crisp tone, just to suit your particular preference.

Cabinet Refinishing

As well as being a musical instrument a piano is also a piece of furniture. There are several ways your piano can be made to look better:

-

Damage to the timber can be professionally repaired. The timber can be restained and resprayed.

-

Spraying can achieve either a gloss, semi-gloss or satin finish in 2-pac or one of the more conventional spray coatings.

-

French polish can be revived or completely redone if required.

Restringing

Why would you restring a piano? As a piano ages, the tone quality may no longer be what it could or should be and the tuning pins may no longer be tight, causing the piano to go out of tune quickly. The strings may come to the end of their natural life span, despite the piano otherwise being in relatively good condition.

-

Restringing generally involves one or more of the following:

  • Replacement of tuning pins and repair/recarving of bridges and installation of new pins.
  • Adjustment of iron frame height to achieve sufficient down-bearing force onto the sound board.
  • Replacement of stringing felt.
  • Replacement of all strings.
-

Replacement bass strings are tailor-made and usually imported from overseas (e.g. Hellerbass, Germany).

-

Replacement treble strings are made up on the spot from spools of piano wire generally kept in stock.

Action Restoration

The action of a piano includes the keyboard and the mechanism activating the hammers and dampers. Restoration often involves re-felting of original action parts. However, in some cases replacement with new hammers and dampers and/or action parts may be a preferable solution.
