Learning to successfully tune a piano takes thousands of hours and lots of practice. Michael Eriksen (The Piano Doctor) has tuned a large number of pianos in Melburnian institutions and homes since 1990.

How often should your piano be tuned? Some guidelines are listed below. |
|
|
- A piano played by a concert pianist or a piano teacher for 6 to 8 hours per day should be tuned every 3 months.
- A piano played by an AMEB student for 3 hours a day, should be tuned half yearly.
- A piano played for 2 to 8 hours per week should be tuned once a year.
- A piano played only once a month could be tuned every 18 months.

Is your piano below concert pitch? |
|
|
- Your strings will sound cleaner and brighter if they are kept at or around concert pitch (A = 440 Hz).
- Pitch affects the resale value of the piano and also your ability to play the piano with other instruments and/or recordings. A substantial Pitch Raise, for example by a full tone, is relatively disruptive to the tuning stability of the piano and it is certainly advisable to correct a pitch issue before it reaches this stage.

How expensive is it to have your piano tuned? |
|
|
- For upright and grand pianos the cost is $155.
- For a pianola the cost increases to $195 because it is necessary
to remove the entire pianola mechanism prior to tuning.
- For raising the pitch of a piano, several tuning passes may be required and I therefore charge an additional $55-$70
depending on the amount of pitch raising required.

As well as being an experienced piano technician Michael has extensive
experience in moving pianos. He takes great care and has moved many concert
pianos both locally and interstate (typically this costs $180-280 for
most jobs).
If you have a need for temporary or even long-term storage of your piano,
contact Michael (typically $20-30 per week). Your piano would be stored under climate-controlled conditions
and be insured for the entire term.
