Rory OBrien, a Sydney artist and print maker, makes linocuts
that appeal to my poetic instincts. Quirky, amusing, sinister,
cheeky, unpeecee and very
black and white, the picture poems include Moth, Leash, Angel,
Kiss, Bath, and Bed. This little booklet contains sixteen of his linocuts, each accompanied by one of my poems.
A unique book and a fabulous gift!

Coming to Australia tells the
story the migration of a Dutch immigrant family to Australia and
the first ten years of their life here. It is based on my
mother’s letters and my father’s stories and attempts to set
them in the social, political and economic environment of the
1950s. It clearly shows the life of the ‘ordinary’ migrant
working class family as they try to establish themselves in
their new home.
My parents arrived in Port Melbourne in
1952 on the Fairsea with three small children, not much luggage, and
loads of optimism. From Bonegilla Migrant Hostel and its riots they went
to a timber mill in the Upper Murray, lived in a shearing shed near
Benalla, operated a laundry in Wodonga and finally settled in the
Dandenong area in Melbourne.
In its second print, it is now part of the
AMES Histories of Migration Series, and has been transcribed into Braille
by Braille House in Brisbane.

"Well, I mean, it's up to you, isn't it?
Either you do or you don't and that's it."
"I suppose you're right."
"Oh, yes, I'm right, especially about this"
"But what is it, exactly?"
"Well, that's up to you too, isn't it? One person's amazingly eclectic
collection is another person's doggerel breakfast. Take it as you find
it."
"What's it to you?"
"Either, neither and both, I'm afraid. You'll just have to make up your
own mind."
"Fat lot of help you are."
"Glad to be of assistance!"
