What to do in Port Vila…

There is quite enough to keep most holiday visitors to Port Vila occupied for one or two weeks without having to delve too deeply into your wallet although that seems to have a habit of happening when you are on holiday!

Erakor lagoon.
Erakor lagoon is a great place for snorkeling and kayaking. There is small sailing catamaran available to hire from Erakor resort nearby and they have jet skis as well that you can ski or wakeboard with.

The Markets.
Open most days the open air markets are a great place to get an idea of how life is in Port Vila. A colourful place where fruit and vegetables in season and a variety of local handicrafts are on sale. If you are feeling a bit gastronomically adventurous you can sample the local snacks. Pork or beef toulook is my favorite for a quick snack.

Shopping.
The most shopping to be done can be done in town. The markets are great for souvenirs like local jewellery, baskets and carvings. Other stores along the strip include the malls which sell DVD’s and handbags. And then there are the duty free shops.

Eating Out.
Port Vila boasts many great restaurants. The restaurants in the resorts are often quite good, L’houstalet is a great place for dinner and during the day there are many café’s in town like café deli and El Gecko.

The Mele Cascades.
About a 15 minute drive out of town, you definitely shouldn’t miss a visit to the cascades. A short walk will take you to the top waterfall where you can swim in the clear pools and then continue on down through the many other pools. There are heaps of rocks to jump off and slide down but if that’s not your thing you can swim at the top and then just walk back down, it is such a beautiful spot that the walk is definitely worth it! There is a small entry fee.

Hideaway Island.
Hideaway island is situated just down the road from the cascades so both can be visited on the same day. It is a 500 vatu entry fee onto the island where you can hire snorkel gear or take your own and buy fish food. The snorkeling is excellent, there is a huge amount of fish life just off the beach. You can also scuba dive on the island.

Horse Riding at Club Hippique.
You can go on trail ride though the local countryside with a small group of visitors and locals.

Golf.
It's not the place to come for a golfing holiday but if you want to play a few rounds of golf the Port Vila Golf and Country Club is the place to go.

Day tours.
If you want to getaway for the day and experience some of the other parts of Efate there are many great tours on offer. If you fancy exploring Havana Harbour, the Congoola, Sailaway tours and Lelepa island tours are all great! They all offer great snorkeling, lunch, a chance to meet other people and learn more about Vanuatu.

Round the island tours.
To explore the island properly a round the island tour is ideal. There are several companies that do tours or you can find a privately owned bus to take you around the island. Horizon Tours offers a 2 in 1 Round Island and river trek tour. On tours such as these you will get to go to some of the nicest beaches on the island and learn more about the history of the country from local guides.

Melanesian feast.
The majority of the hotels offer Melanesian feasts. It’s an opportunity to taste the local food, kava, see traditional dance and costume.

National Museum and Cultural Centre.
If you’re interested in finding out more about this wonderful country and the Melanesian culture this is where you want to go! They have on display artifacts that span all of Vanuatu’s past from the time of the ancient Lapita people, the French/British condominium of the New Hebrides and independence in 1980.

Ecotours.
You can see the island and get some exercise with Ecotours. They offer walking bike riding and kayaking tours to some of the most picturesque parts of Efate.

Fishing.
If you’re up for a spot of fishing on your visit to Port Vila there are a number of companies who will take you out to prime fishing spots. The largest recorded fish was caught here in Vanuatu!

Diving.
If you want to learn to dive there is no better place. Some of the dive companies include the Big Blue and Nautilus.
