1. The purpose of the group is to provide a safe place where men affected by prostate cancer, and their carers, can support one another, develop friendships, share ideas and thoughts, obtain information from health professionals and each other, and learn coping skills in a non-judgmental and caring atmosphere.
2. The group does not take the place of medical and/or professional health care. Members do not prescribe treatment or diagnose symptoms. Each member is responsible for assessing information provided at meetings for himself or herself. Information that is presented during group time is not necessarily endorsed or recommended by the group, its leaders, the Australian Prostate Cancer Foundation, NSW Cancer Council or Hope Healthcare.
3. The group leaders are not experts. However, all members have their own expertise in dealing with prostate cancer, and are encouraged to take part in the meetings.
4. Members are encouraged to discuss their problems and situations, but not to dwell on them. The goal of the group is to offer support and to focus on finding solutions and ways of coping with problems. We help others as we ourselves have been helped.
5. Everything spoken at the meetings is confidential.
6. The group belongs to all the members, and everyone is responsible for its success.
7. No-one is coerced into talking; all who wish to talk are given a turn. No one member is allowed to monopolise the meeting.
8. All members are expected to show courtesy towards other members. This means that members do not interrupt or talk while someone else is expressing his or her views. Group members respect others' feelings and do not attack, criticise or judge another member's views.
9. The group does not promote goods or services.
10. Meetings begin and end on time.
