No.1 May, 2002
Welcome to the inaugural meeting of the Northern Beaches Prostate Cancer Support Group. The Group has been several months in preparation and we hope that the program and services that we will be providing, will fill a need in the area. We have been working in co-operation with the Support Groups at the Royal North Shore Hospital and with the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital at Wahroonga (to whom we offer our thanks). We know that men and their partners from the Northern Beaches have been attending those Groups, so we felt that we should try to provide a Group closer to home for these people.
Sincere thanks should be given to Mona Vale Hospital, and in particular to the Palliative Care Unit, for their support and encouragement. A special thanks to Sister Ann Owers for the enormous amount of assistance she has given in keeping things rolling.
In this first Newsletter we are including some draft Guidelines for the future operation of the Group. We should be very glad to have any feedback from you as to the appropriateness and usefulness of these, and to have any suggestions for additions or alterations.
Also, we have planned a program for several months ahead which you will see below. However, some of the items are not yet firmly fixed, and we may need to vary these as we go along. To help us with future planning, we are asking you to fill out a brief survey about your needs and interests.
Please take a moment to fill this out before you leave.
Finally, we hope you find this first meeting interesting, and something to encourage you to come along to future sessions. We want you to feel that this is your group. In a large part, it is up to you to help make it a thriving and successful one for men suffering from prostate cancer in the Northern Beaches area, for their partners and carers, and for any men of any age who want to find out more about this disease that affects so many. Let us know if you would like to take an active part in helping to develop the Group. Please spread the word to your friends and relations, and tell them that the Group is here for them.
