The Birth and Baptism entries of Richard and Jane Grayling's children.

The following 3 pages were shown to me by Lorna Ridgway nee Sherwood. Someone in the Grayling family has recorded the birth and baptism dates of Richard and Jane Grayling's children.
There are also entries recording the marriages of their three eldest daughters, Anne, Lucy and Susannah.

The deaths of three of Richard and Jane's children, Jane Llewellyn ' Gertrude Amy and Matilda Alice Grayling are also shown.

Apart from the Graylings, the following family names also appear; Martin, Jones and Keam.

There are a total of four pages? Page one was too long to fit into the scanner, so it had to be scanned in two sections.

The entries were written on blue, foolscap size paper. Each page measures 335 x 210mm.

A watermark on the paper reads ‘A. Cowan & Sons. 1854? Patent.’

The first entry to appear is...

Launceston VDL.
Anne Jane Grayling born 5th October 1837.

This entry would have been made many years later, sometime after the year 1854 which is the date shown on the water mark on the pages.

The latest entry to appear is ..

Matilda Alice Grayling died 2nd August 1863 at Lexton aged 6 years & 4 months.

The pages were given to Lorna by Gertrude Henderson. Gertrude kept them in her writing desk which she brought with her from her home in Masters street Caulfield when she went to live with her neice Lorna Ridgway.

According to Lorna, the pages would have been left with Gertrude by her mother Agnes Emma Henderson nee Grayling.

So who wrote the entries on the pages? I suspect they may have been written by Agnes' mother Jane Ludden Grayling. In her old age Jane lived in her own home on the Henderson farm. When she died in 1894, the pages would have been kept by her daughter Agnes Henderson. When Agnes died in 1925, they were left with Agnes' daughters one of whom was Gertrude Henderson. It was Gertrude who left them with Lorna.

Jane Grayling as the mother of the children would have known details such as birth and baptism dates along with the dates her three children died.
