A Lesson Learned

"Hi Sirius," James said, opening the door.  "You're just in time for Harry's lunch."  He grinned down at his son, whom he was carrying pressed against hi side.  Harry ignored his father's smile, instead stretching his chubby arms out to his godfather with a forlorn cry.

"Has he been keeping you waiting?" Sirius asked the baby boy, taking him from James and hoisting him into his own arms.  Harry gurgled his delight as his godfather carried him into the kitchen and seated him in his feeding chair.  "Poor Harry!  We can't have you starving, now, can we?"  He pulled another chair over next to Harry's, while James collected a plastic spoon and bowl from the counter and handed them to him.

"This almost looks like proper food," Sirius commented, poking curiously at the soggy rice and finely chopped chicken in the bowl with the spoon.  Harry lunged with both hands, trying to grab the spoon and the bowl at the same time.  He cried out piteously when Sirius held them out of his reach.

"He can use a spoon, now," James informed him.

"Really?" Sirius queried of the baby boy.  Harry furrowed his brow unhappily and reached again for the spoon.  This time Sirius placed it in one tiny hand, and moved the bowl so it was right in front of him.

"You'll be wanting a wand, next, won't you?" Sirius grinned as he watched Harry.  The baby boy frowned with intense concentration as he carefully scooped up rice with his spoon.

James chuckled from the other side of the kitchen.  "Oh, I don't think he's ready for that yet."

Sirius glanced across at his friend - and consequently was totally unprepared for the rain of rice that cascaded down upon him.  He sprang to his feet with a shout.

"What the - ?"

"I told you he could use a spoon, now," said James, laughing at Sirius's predicament.

"Very funny, Prongs."  He pulled a face at Harry, who was also laughing.  A huge smile lit the boy's face, and his green eyes shone.  "I suppose you think this is funny, too?"

Harry giggled some more, and dug his spoon into his bowl once again.

"Oh no, not this time!"  Sirius made it out of range just as the new barrage was set loose, and glaced sidelong at his old friend.  "A beater in the making, I see."

"Quite likely," agreed James.  "You should stand back over there so he has someone to aim at."

Sirius eyed Harry carefully.  Now that there were no targets nearby, he was managing to shovel about as much food into his mouth as fell on the floor.  "I believe it's a father's duty to instruct his son."

"I know," James grinned, a wicked glint in his eyes.

"You taught him that on purpose," Sirius accused, dancing blue eyes belying the angry lines of his expression.

"Just wait until he can use a wand," James promised.

Green eyes observed the pair curiously as they laughed.
