The Sacraments
The Catholic Catechism states:
… A sacrament is a sacred action. It is not sacred in itself but in its association with Jesus and His Salvation and through The Holy Spirit empowering.
As a sacrament is an expression of Gods Love, Mercy and Grace and there is no Biblical passage to command them as they are a result and not a cause of this Grace. The foundation for this pillar is Gods Love, Mercy and Grace working through man, which is Biblical.
The the Bible never calls anything a sacrament. It does define things as being Holy for Gods purposes, but none of these are in the sacraments recognised by Christian religions. So what God has considered sacred to Him (sacrament) man has not for the purposes of defining what is a sacrament!
Sacraments are not a decree of God but of man in which Gods Grace is declared to be given to man in a special way. But Gods Grace is perfect and is given to everyone in the same way. It is just the way we perceive it is different for the various ways He Graces us with His Grace. This perception is based on what we see and not the completeness of Gods Grace towards us which is given without partiality or favour.
Grace that is evidenced by sacraments is usually to do with things on earth and not in heaven so that sacraments are an expression of Gods Grace towards us on earth and not in its totality towards us.
If Gods Grace is the same towards everyone but limited in a way by the degree to which we accept it why then is one thing a sacrament and something else is not? Why do some churches have 7 and others 2 and others none?
Why is baptism with water a sacrament and Baptism of The Holy Spirit not a Sacrament?
Why is extreme unction a sacrament and healing is not one?
Sacraments are said to give Grace to the recipient to help them spiritually in a matter. This misses the whole point of Matthew 6: 33, that as we obey God in all we do, He will supply all our needs, prepare us for any thing we are to do for Him and also to carry it out. We do not need to ask for anything. His Grace has already promised us all we need.
The Grace of God has been given to get you to that sacramenta event (preparing you for it to be able to successfully pass through it as well as to live after it) so that Gods Grace was working well before the event called a Sacrament. This is because the path you walk to reach that event and which continues past was prepared by God from before the creation of the world.
Calling it a sacrament only points to what God has already done and adds nothing to the Grace of God shown to the person already to prepare them for that event as well as to live through and after it.
Mans concept of what a sacrament is, is basically flawed! God has not decreed what are sacraments so man has no right to decree what they are or to ascribe special Grace to them or even to bring them into existence as a special class of event.
Everything is a result of Gods Grace so to single out something as a sacrament is to focus on a small part of the workings of Gods Grace in your life.
A Christian is to live a holy life so that all they do will be sacred to God and in a sense a sacrament and not just some special event in a persons life that the church wants to incorrectly emphasise to the exclusion of other possibly more important events in a person life such as:
Baptism of The Holy Spirit
Deliverance Ministry events
Betrothal
Miracles
Anything that is a major spiritual milestone in a persons life.
The sacramental system is also flawed as it is excludes many other important things where Gods Grace is evidenced as well as being based on a wrong premise that it gives Grace to go on when God has already given the Grace to get there and continue on from the event that has been called a sacrament.
The other problem is that sacraments are church orientated and not Kingdom orientated so much of the Grace that allows us to enter The Kingdom of God and live as a citizen of that Kingdom is ignored by the sacraments.
Perhaps if Gods working in The Body and not in a church or denomination was looked at the sacraments would be more relevant to The Christian life and not just to events the church wants to be in control of or emphasise for some reason.
Sacramentals are basically a small sacrament although I do not know how you can differentiate between different levels of The Grace of God when He always gives you His Grace in its totality.
