| Lin's First Web Site | Day Eleven - Guangzhou - 23 January 2003 |
We arrived at Guangzhou Airport in plenty of time to go to the Business Class lounge which turns out to just be a very hot room with some free soft drinks and beer and biscuits (can't wait for Guangzhou Airport to be upgraded) - Xiao Qiu of course charmed all the Business Class fellow travellers, well the male ones anyway - have I said before that she's a real flirt when it comes to men. Finally we boarded and Xiao Qiu continued to smile and chat with her fellow travellers but soon she became restless and needed to walk around and explore, as her nature. This is not easy to do on a busy plane as the crew tries to feed all passengers quickly and get us all off to sleep for the night-time flight to Oz. Xiao Qiu was not impressed with the infant meal supplied by the airline and did not eat much of our adult meals either. All four families travelling with their new daughters had decided to administer Baby Panadol rather than Phenergan as the drug of choice in order to make them sleepy but for almost all of them this did not work. Three hours into the flight and Xiao Qiu was still very restless and noisy. This wasn't helped by the fact that we were in Row 1 and right next to the toilet so that the comings and goings of her fellow travellers kept her stimulated. We were not supplied with basinettes as China Southern said they only provided basinettes for children under 12 months - we thought this was silly as our daughter is only wearing cloths to fit a 9-12 month old. One of the families whose daughter was 12 month old did get a basinette but they found it too constricted and hot for her so put her to sleep on the floor in front of them - the other families followed suit. But being near the toilets we were worried that someone would step on her if taking a short cut to the loo. Another dose of Panadol was tried but this also did not really work. Eventually she fell asleep on Geoff and later she was passed to me (one of my first cuddles, but she didn't really know she was doing it!). She tosses around a lot in her sleep and, as mentioned before, sweats a lot so it was not comfortable having a baby sleep on me even though I was overjoyed to finally have her in my arms. The cold I caught from Xiao Qiu in Nanning had got worse and I had a very sore dry throat so there was nothing about the flight that I enjoyed. Whilst Xiao Qiu and I sort-of-slept, Geoff found some drinking companions so he was happy. |
