The fight was hard and often seemed unsuccessful. However, what really happened? Before 19 December 1996, community awareness of the dangers for school child pedestrians around buses was virtually zero. Occasionally and tragically, community outrage was whipped up when a young life was lost - then the heat would go out of the issue and people would forget. 1994, the Parliament's standing committee on road safety, STAYSAFE, issued its report STAYSAFE 26 and announced a new deal for School Child Pedestrians Around Buses. Many recommendations were made in that report and the committee expected that they would be implemented in an orderly and committed way by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA). No such luck. The RTA sat on the report and did virtually nothing for more than two years. In the meantime, Eric was denied the basic protections that were recommended by STAYSAFE and was killed on 19 December 1996 - just over 2 years after the release of STAYSAFE 26. What happened next was the "miracle". The press coverage was almost explosive. Eric's angel face was on the front page next day and the community rallied behind this outrageous event. 2004 sees a new chapter where "Eric's" park is named in his memory. Dedication was 18 December 2004
