THE VINTAGE JOYSTICK MUSEUM

Showcasing the best Digital Joysticks from the past.

Why do we love Joysticks ?

If you grew up in the 1980's-1990's, the first Video game you ever played would have most likely been at you local Fish-n-Chip shop or local Video Arcade, on an Arcade machine that uses a Joystick or steering wheel. so you would have got used to the concept of a Joystick at an early age.

This web page was set up primarily to Display the Fantastic Joysticks & Game controllers, that we grew up with, back in the 1980's-1990's.

There are currently 155 Joysticks / Flight Controls / Control pads, Displayed here.

Did you know ?

Digital Joysticks can contain 3 totally seperate Fire Buttons, but most Computers and consoles do not use all 3. Most games on the Atari 2600 & Commodore 64 only support the use of 1 Fire button. Where as the Amiga has some games that use 2 Fire buttons. SEGA has always supported 2, but its 3rd button is non-standard.

How does a Digital Joystick work?

Very simply, you Ground the wire you want to Activate. For example, if you want to go UP, you just connect Pin-1 to Ground(Pin-8), if you want to activate Fire-1, you just connect Pin-6 to Ground(Pin-8)...

Standard Wiring Diagram for a 9-Pin Digital Joystick:

Joystick CABLE Pins - as Viewed from the SOLDER SIDE !!
Pin - Function
1 = UP
2 = DOWN
3 = LEFT
4 = RIGHT
5 = FIRE-2
6 = FIRE-1
7 = +5v
8 = GROUND
9 = FIRE-3

Joystick CABLE Pins - as Viewed EXTERNALY, Like this ->

These Joystick all connect to a Computer, or Games machine, using a Standard D9 plug, and are all Digital Joysticks.

These Joysticks are compatible with the following :
