Connect a SCSI to IDE Adapter to a CMD Hard Drive Controller.

I bought this from Ebay USA and decided to connect it to my CMD hard Drive to see what New IDE devices I could use on my humble C64.

The Brand is "I-O DATA" and the Model: "R-IDSC-E/R"

(28-8-2010)

The results are detialed below:

"R-IDSC-E/R" TOP Side - SCSI Port & Jumpers

"R-IDSC-E/R" BOTTOM Side - IDE Port.

9 JUMPER PINS

Note: Pin 1 is at the Bottom, Pin 9 at the Top.

- PIN -
JUMPER SETTINGS - FUNCTION.
1
SCSI Device number 0-7 (Default open circuit)
2
SCSI Device number 0-7 (Default open circuit)
3
SCSI Device number 0-7 (Default open circuit)
4
MODE = SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 (Default open circuit)
5
MODE = SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 (Default open circuit)
6
MODE = SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 (Default open circuit)
7
PIO or DMA (Default open circuit)
8
Flash the onboard ROM (Default open circuit)
9
SCSI Termination ON (Default open circuit)

JUMPERS 1-9

The First 3 jumpers are the SCSI Device, so set that to ZERO if you intend to replace the Internal HD.

The Jumpers 4-7 are the most important. Play around with these in lots of different combinations to get various devices working. It will vary greatly depending on what you are trying to connect. All OPEN CIRCUIT is Default, so First try leaving all of them open.

The Jumnpers 8 and 9 should be left OPEN CIRCUIT, as that is the best setting for all devices.

IDE "CD-BURNER" (SONY)

I was able to Read "700MB CD's on my C64, The Speed was identical to SCSI.

IDE "DVD-BURNER" (PIONEER-110)

I was able to Read DUAL LAYER 8.5GB DVD's on my C64, This was excellent and the Speed was identical to SCSI.

IDE HARD DRIVE

I was able to FORMAT, SAVE TO and LOAD From every IDE Hard Drive I tested. This is great news because SCSI hard drives are getting harder to find, but having said that, the reality is SATA has obsoleted IDE too.

IDE ZIP DRIVE - 100MB

I had mixed results with my IDE ZIP Drive, still experimenting with this one.

SATA to IDE Adapter

SATA to IDE Adapter

This is my next project , to buy one of these and a SATA Hard Drive and see if I can Connect an Adapter to an Adapter, and then to the CMD Hard Drive, to use a SATA Hard drive mechanism. (17-2-2011)

CF Cards, SD Cards, Micro SD cards.

IDE : CF CARD - ADAPTER

DRIVE INFO = Works fine, Identidies CF Card : Model, Size, etc.

LLFORMAT = Works fine. Verifies OK also.

CREATE SYS = Failed with the "R-IDSC-E/R" with CF Cards but it worked with an Apple brand, CF Micro Drive.

Thanks to Brian Mora for providing this.

CF MICRO DRIVE

A sample of a CF Microdrive. These are an amazing little device, they are actually a little hard drive, the same size as a CF card.

I also tried a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive on my CMD Hard Drive, with the IDE to SCSI Interface/Adaptor, AND THE IDE CF CARD ADAPTER but as usual, it Failed at the last step. (17-2-2011)

UPDATE: (20-3-2011): It is now working fine. For some reason the RAMLink was causing me problems UNSEEN!! so when I disabled it, and tried again, it worked 100% , Brilliant Device.

Thanks to Brian Mora for providing the CF-Adaptor, CF-Card & CF-Micro Drive, for Testing.

IDE TO SD CARD + MICRO SD CARD

WARNING - I Paid for 2 of these, from a shop on EBAY Hong Kong, run by Ebay username : xiao2huan , Ebay item number: 370387493835.

The items Never arived, so "xiao2huan", said he would give me a refund but he DID NOT, and he TRICKED me into waiting 45 days, so that Ebay & Paypal could no longer take action against him. DO NOT BUY FROM xiao2huan

After a lot of trouble trying to buy one of these, (see the paragraph below the picture for the explanation), I finally got one of these "SD CARD to IDE" Adapters and Connected the Adapter to a SCSI-to-IDE Adapter, and then to the CMD Hard Drive's SCSI Controller. To use an SD CARD on a Commodre 64. And it worked perfectly.

I then bought an Micro-SD card with a SD Card Adapter so I also got a 4GB Micro-SD to work with my CMD HD.

(28-5-2011)

WARNING : Did you know that PayPal & Ebay will not help you after 45 days from the date you paid for an item !!

Paypal Buyer Protection DOES NOT EXIST !!! after 45 days, it Totally EXPIRES !!!!! and as a result, you LOSE ALL YOUR MONEY !!! Always lodge a complaint within 45 days.

SD CARD

Micro SD CARD

SCSI MULTI-CARD READER

There are lots of these around, at various Internet shops, if you do a search with Scroogle, but I have not bought one yet, should work fine with the CMD Hard Drive controller.
