CBM 8250 Compatability

The CBM 8250 & 8250lp are Dual Drive units,(1.05MB each), which are compatible with the SFD1001, So all of the following tools may also be used on these Drive types. The CBM 8050 is a single sided Dual Drive unit,(502k each), so only some of these tools may work on it.

FLOPPY DISK CAPACITY

This is an amazing device. It uses standard 360k Floppy disks, but it Formats the disk to 1050k.
High density disks will not Format. I have tried 1.2MB Disks and 1.6MB Disks but they will not work.

A 360k disk , has a capacity of 180k per side, Yet the SFD1001 Formats each side to 502k, which is 2.8 times more than it was meant to hold, but these 360 Disks work well as long as they are New and High quality material like VERBATIM brand.

Note: The heads alone do not make a drive 100tpi. The manual says the head is positioned over the track by a stepper motor/band and associated electronics.

The head is a 100 TPI type, so it is an early form of High Density, which actually holds more data than the famous 1581 drive, so for a device made in 1982 , it was way ahead of its time.

LOADING SPEED

Another big advantage of using these IEEE-488 Disk Drivers on a Commodore 64 is the improved Loading speed, because the IEEE-488 is a Parallel loading cable. Loading Speed can be 5-10 times faster than a 1541, depending on the Drive type you are loading from, ie- Floppy Drive or Hard Drive.

SFD-1001 Test Demo Disk	This is the SFD-1001 Test Demo Disk, It includes a few SFD Specific PRG's but the only bad Bug is the the actual "PERFORMANCE TEST" program. What I have found is, although I have achieved Perfect Alignment on several SFD1001's that I have worked on, using a brand new - Freshly Formatted floppy disk, (of high quality), the The Test Demo program still says the Drive has Failed test, In the MIDDLE of Testing, BUT, if you select CONTINUE, then the drive completes all tests sucessfully and PASSES. IEEE-488 PATCH	This is a patch for the IEC64(w) IEEE488 interface cartridge (by WAW Elektronik) REX and other IEEE Carts might also work. Using IEC64w patcher, you may choose how to split IEEE488 and IEC drive address ranges. Furthermore you have the option to remedy some problems of the memory check routine and to select the screen colors. Meaning of DIP switches change, but are listed in detail by the patcher. The SFD-1001 will connect Directly to the original Families of Commodore Computers, like the: PET,700, 4000 & 8000 Family, but when connecting it to a C64 or C128, you need to use an IEEE-488 Cartridge or Interface of some sort.
