How we
loved New Zealand……..
Terry Yates
Terry was lucky to go. Somebody had dropped out, so he decided to have a go.
Terry’s goal before leaving was to catch a nice trout on a dry fly. He wasn’t
disappointed. He had a most memorable flight on a Helicopter and experienced
fish rising mid-day on a river. This allowed Terry the most unforgetable day’s
dry fly fishing. He’d love to come back in two years time and next time,
maybe camp on the river and really enjoy some high country fishing. Terry
reckons he had a great feed, maybe because he was the cook. His funniest
experience was watching Russell, alias Possum nearly get washed down the
river. Terry caught 8 fish, all on dry flies and size 14 bead heads. His
favourite flies are Adams, Royal Wulfs and brown bead heads. Everyone was
helpful including Bill Barr, Big Steve (that’s not me!) Alan Hughes and
Geoff. Terry’s advice to everyone is to practice, practice, practice! His
group was great because no one snored.
Chris Myszka
Chris wanted to catch the magnificent big trout of New Zealand. Well he did
and he ended up with a least 32 fish! His most memorable experience was
getting busted off but you need to talk to him about this. He hopes to return
to New Zealand again but next time take the Helicopter ride. His favourite
flies are Baby dolls and gold bead head nymphs. The style of fishing is
definitely different and Chris learnt a lot from it. Hopefully, he can adapt
these to some Aussie streams and conditions. Listen to what the locals say but
adapt it to the area you are fishing. Chris could improve his fishing by using
what he has learnt from the trip and going aback again. Pat O’Keefe was
helpful and had a lot to offer. He loved Steve Varga’s wife’s recipes but
reckons Steve snores and so does Bill! *********
Bill Sharpe.
Bill just wanted to have a good time and seek the pleasures of fishing for
trout in New Zealand. He is definitely coming back to New Zealand despite that
memorable dip in the TT. His funniest experience was watching very weary fly
fishers enjoying themselves. His favourite fly is the Jack Spratt. He was
lucky enough to catch a fish on his own designed fly. Bill improved on his
casting and fishing but still sees room for more practice. He thinks he could
improve his fishing by serenading to them ( get rid of that yellow raincoat
first). He thinks that Steve Varga was pretty helpful but agrees that everyone
in his group snored (thanks Bill)…they were all buggered!
Lyn Cassar
Lyn hadn’t been on a holiday for 6 years so it was high time. It was also an
opportunity of a lifetime. Her goal was get a stamp on her passport and to
catch a fish. She had a great time feeding the baby lamb at the farm. She is
definitely coming back to New Zealand. She’d love to catch more fish, visit
the South Island, go up in a chopper and stay in a cabin on a river somewhere.
Terry cooked some great meals. Her funniest experience was Russell bolting up
the bank when he was sprung by ‘security’ whilst fishing near ? Lyn caught
a fish and missed quite a few. She learnt some casting techniques and also how
to stalk. She agrees that practice, practice, practice will improve her
fishing. Possum snored heaps but was also helpful (?). So was Terry, Charlie
and most of the other members.
Steve Varga Well,
I just can’t stop talking about. Read all my articles. Thanks to Bill and
all the others for organising the trip. I guess my most memorable experience
is to have taken my son away and experienced fly fishing with him!
