New Zealand 2003 - White Rabbits

Gordon, Harold, Cameron and I were motoring along quietly pondering about getting stuck into some of the big ones at Lake Rarawhatchacallit (O’Keefes Lake). As we approached the right turn at the track into the lake, out of the blue comes a "look at the white rabbit near the fence at the top of the hill.". An instant reply came "that aint no rabbit - it’s a supermarket shopping bag". "Bull…t, I can see its ears sticking up" came the response. "If it’s a shopping bag, it will in the same place tomorrow." So we went fishing to not give another thought to the alleged white rabbit.

Next day, on route to the same venue, and at the same turnoff came "look – there’s that white rabbit again." Came the instant reply, "bull…t, it’s the same supermarket shopping bag." The defence was "look – it’s moved a couple of meters." "No it hasn’t, it’s still in the same place." "Well, we will check it next time."

Next day at the same turnoff and at the same spot on the hill was our white rabbit. Not a word was uttered – just a cheesy grin on one of the occupants in the back seat with a nervous cough to prevent a laughter eruption.

Well from here on we started to spot white rabbits with regular consistency. The frequency of observations became more frequent as we approached the supermarket. We noticed that they love to sit on the top barb wire rung of the fence. They also like to sit in the upper branches of trees. They do not have much carrying capacity – they cannot support a slab. In Australia, pigs might fly, but in NZ, white rabbits do fly as we spotted a few soaring over the cars in the carpark. Not all the rabbits were white, there were a few greens and blues.

Later when fishing, I spotted a natural coloured rabbit racing along the ground. The rabbit would not slow down so I could check which supermarket was printed on its side.
