How
To Tie a Deepwater Nymph
Steve Varga’s Tongariro
Deep Water nymph
Using a size 8 Tiemco all
purpose hook, tie on a strand of crystal flash and maribou tail. This material
comes from the "boa" on material purchased from Spotlight. Use excess
to wind on body on un weighted versions. Otherwise, trim excess and set aside
for later.
Tie on gold ridding, figure
eight the dumbell eyes and glue with super glue. Wrap tying silk all along hook
and glue with nail varnish. Tie on lead weight for body and apply another drop
of glue.
Wrap on maribou body fairly
tight. Use an additional amount of dubbed seal’s fur above black maribou to
trap air bubbles. Wrap gold wire along the body and tie off. Add a small amount
of flash to the back. A heavy fly such as this is ideal in fast water when
deep-water nymphing. In the Tongariro river and some of the others, including
Australian and World Champion events, dumbell eyes are not permitted, so replace
with additional lead. This nymph is the dropper fly and a tiny glo bug or nymph
is the point fly. A fluorescent indicator is tied to the leader/ fly line loop.
Nymphing is great fun but don’t forget to duck and wear ear protectors.
