The Tom Jones Variant, by Chris Myszka

I think that if that had a "One Fly " competition in Victoria over winter or for that matter, any time of the year, then the Tom Jones and BMS would be competing for selection. The other flies wouldn’t stand a chance.

The fly pictured, is tied by Chris Myszka, our top tier and he has added his unique touch with a little throat bib added to the underside of the fly. Just one of his little signatures.

We tie this fly really from whatever road kill comes our way. I think in this case, Chris accessed someone’s Chinchilla coat and dyed the bunny fur, olive, but don’t let his wife know that. Seriously, it was bunny but I believe it came from the Op shop.

Wallaby or Kangaroo fur would be OK but for our New Zealand viewers, white bunny dyed olive works just as well.

MATERIALS

Hook, size 10 – 12 long shank

Body, Lead optional, wrapped in olive fur

Tail, Possum or Tassie roadkill wallaby (I got a nice piece from Brian)

Wings, Olive fur

Head, black size 8 silk, fluoro orange might be an

Interesting concept

Throat, orange or brown feather, the type you would find

in a show bag with American Indian stuff in it.

Tie in lead and tail, form thin cigar olive-shaped body over rear half of fly.

Add wings. Continue body to front half of fly and add second set of wings.

Tie off and form head. Add throat to underside and tie off. Varnish head. Use three coats for a nice sheen and clean eye.

Try a fluoro orange head. Leave lead out for a slower sinking fly. Thanks Chris!
