Coin Toss Shootout Favours Spain
Date Posted: January 26 2005
Spain and Turkey again struggled to find the back of the net for a second successive game. Both teams failed to create, let alone, take chances in the match, leading to a very boring and uninspiring performance. Even extra time couldn't even separate the teams so penalties ensued. During the opening shots of the shootout, it looked like even penalty opportunities wouldn't be good enough as both teams missed their first kicks. The next nine however were pure gems as players placed the ball passed the keeper left, right and centre. With scores locked at 4-4, Spain had the oppotunity to take the game into sudden death. Spain made their kick. Turkey knew they needed to now make their next kick or it was over. The ball was kicked straight into the welcoming hands of the keeper, sending Spain into the World Super League for the first time.

Croatia have defied all the odds and beaten the Portugese with a draw in Lisbon overnight. The Portugese were quick to score and level the tie, but were unable to keep their clean sheet as the Croatians put themselves ahead on aggregate with a late equaliser from Prso. It was a well taken header that wrong footed the Portugese keeper and landed in the back of the net. The Croatians are the third team to qualify and look to have big ambitions with the confidence gained with this win.

First Leg Qualification Matches Completed
Date Posted: January 21 2005

The remaining first leg qualification matches have now been completed. There were a few surprised but on a whole the football was of the highest quality. Clearly all eyes were on the England and Brazil match in London. Both sets of fans hoped the game would be an historic encounter, the game was anything but. England controlled possession early but were unable to convert that possession into a goal. Brazil were also looking quite flat, so it was no wonder both teams entered half time at 0-0. The second half was much of the same, with Brazil controlling the play from midfield. Neither side looked like scoring and so it ended as a 0-0 draw.

In other matches, Germany went down 1-0 at home to the Czech Republic thanks to a lucky goal by Baros. Mexico and Denmark played out at a 1-1 draw. Uruguay and Sweden played out a dull 0-0 draw, as did Iran and Greece, and Turkey and Spain. While the USA snuck out of jail coming from behind to beat Japan by 2-1 in Tokyo.

In the third game of qualifiers today, Croatia met Portugal in a titanic affair. Both teams went hard at it, giving no room at all. The whole match was a dog fight, but no goals came of it. That was, until a scrappy shot came from Croatian midfielder Srna straight at the Portuguese keeper Ricardo. Ricardo couldn't handle it and spilled the ball directly onto the feet of Prso who was able to react quickly enough to get a kick on the ball and roll it over the line for a goal. That sent the 20,000 strong crowd into a rampant frenzy as they watched their team down the Euro 2004 finalists by 1-0.

Argentina played against the Netherlands at home and come up on the wrong side of the score line as they went down 2-0. Van Nistelrooy was gifted a penalty early in the match before, Kuyt slotted away a brilliant solo run to cap off the game for the Netherlands. This is a poor start for Argentina who were expected to dispatch of the Dutch team fairly easily, especially with their home crowd support. The Argentines must now score at least 2 goals in the Netherlands, if they are to have any chance at coming back.
