The
second leg of the qualification matches will be played
on Thursday 26 January 2006. That gives teams approximately
4 days to prepare for them. For many teams, the second
leg means having to win away from home in order to qualify.
Over the first leg of qualification matches, only one
team managed to win at home. While seven teams failed
to score at home. Will this trend continue?

| First
Leg Qualification Matches Completed |

The
remaining first leg qualification matches have now
been completed. There were a few surprised but on a
whole the football was of the highest quality. Clearly
all eyes were on the England and Brazil match in London.
Both sets of fans hoped the game would be an historic
encounter, the game was anything but. England controlled
possession early but were unable to convert that possession
into a goal. Brazil were also looking quite flat, so
it was no wonder both teams entered half time at 0-0.
The second half was much of the same, with Brazil controlling
the play from midfield. Neither side looked like scoring
and so it ended as a 0-0 draw.
In
other matches, Germany went down 1-0 at home to the Czech
Republic thanks to a lucky goal by Baros. Mexico and Denmark
played out at a 1-1 draw. Uruguay and Sweden played out
a dull 0-0 draw, as did Iran and Greece, and Turkey and
Spain. While the USA snuck out of jail coming from behind
to beat Japan by 2-1 in Tokyo.

| Croatia,
One Up for the Home Side |

In
the third game of qualifiers today, Croatia met Portugal
in a titanic affair. Both teams went hard at it, giving
no room at all. The whole match was a dog fight, but
no goals came of it. That was, until a scrappy shot came
from Croatian midfielder Srna straight at the Portuguese
keeper Ricardo. Ricardo couldn't handle it and spilled
the ball directly onto the feet of Prso who was able
to react quickly enough to get a kick on the ball and
roll it over the line for a goal. That sent the 20,000
strong crowd into a rampant frenzy as they watched their
team down the Euro 2004 finalists by 1-0.

The
Italians started off strongly but were quickly put on
the back foot as the French strikers started pelting
the Italian goal. It took well into the second half before
French striker Henry made the break-through and put the
red, white and blue up one. The Italians couldn't recover
and eventually went down.

| Argentina
in Trouble at Home |

Argentina
played against the Netherlands at home and come up on
the wrong side of the score line as they went down 2-0.
Van Nistelrooy was gifted a penalty early in the match
before, Kuyt slotted away a brilliant solo run to cap
off the game for the Netherlands. This is a poor start
for Argentina who were expected to dispatch of the Dutch
team fairly easily, especially with their home crowd
support. The Argentines must now score at least 2 goals
in the Netherlands, if they are to have any chance at
coming back.

The
qualification schedule has been released today. All first
leg fixtures will be played today, with the return leg
to be played in a week's time. Many believe that the
delayed release will hamper team preparations. A sentiment
not shared by coaches. The tournament has been on the
cards for several months, giving teams plenty of time
to prepare.

| England
Look Worried |

England
fans cried out in despair as the news they wanted least
to hear came true. Brazil and England are to face off
in the qualification round. Only one of the two teams
can make it through, and many believe it to be the the
match of the tournament before it even kicks off. The
two teams had hoped to meet in the tournament final,
but now those hopes are now dashed as one team has to
be eliminated. English coach, Sven Goran Eriksson, believes
that Brazil are by no means an unbeatable team, having
said that, he did qualify that they are an exceptional
team and can punish any slack play.

the tournament group stage. |
