Dokic says: I’ll stay an Aussie
Damir Dokic has moved quickly to end speculation that he’ll be turning his back on Australia, saying he had no intention of leaving the country that has made him famous.
Damir said that, irrespective of what his daughter Jelena decided to do, he would be remaining proudly Australian.
“This is good country. I buy a car. I smash your tape recorder,” said a jovial Dokic at his press conference.
Over the past few years, Damir has emerged as one of Australia’s most beloved international entertainers and celebrities. His quiet manner, gentle humour and love of life has made him a favourite both here and abroad. He recently accepted a post with Tourism Australia as unofficial ambassador for the country.
But there have been concerns that he might be tempted to follow in the footsteps of his completely stuck-up young daughter and seek to return to Yugoslavia. Dokic, however, said he had no such plans.
“Jelena is Jelena,” he said with withering insight. “Damir is Damir. I smash your camera.”
Dokic said he would continue to work for Australian agencies such as the Agriculture Department, for whom he provided monitoring of fish prices during a visit to the US earlier this year.
A spokesman said Damir simply saw that as part of his national duties “as proud Australian”. The spokesman said that, even if Jelena left Australia, Damir would continue to take a ‘back seat’ role in his daughter’s career, watching with interest from the sidelines but leaving her tennis education to the experts.
“But even if that happens, Damir will still be a dinky-di Aussie – and he’ll still call Australia home,” the spokesman said.
Damir’s lifelong friends, John Newcombe and Tony Roche, said they were relieved to hear of Damir’s renewed commitment to Australia. “We can ill-afford to lose statesmen and ambassadors of his calibre,” said Newcombe.
‘Aussie’ Damir himself put it this way: “I make money. I am victim of Government plot. You are racists. I smash your mobile phone.”
