2006 CommitteeDr Layna GroenChairpersonLayna graduated from the University of Sydney in 1980 with a Bachelor of Sceince. She completed a Diploma of Education the following year. She returned to study at the New South Wales Institute of Technology, completing the Master in Applied Science in Operations Research in 1987. She followed this with Master of Commerce (Hons) in Finance at the University of New South Wales (1992) and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Technology, Sydney (2002). Dr Groen is a Senior Lecturer in Operations Research with the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney. Layna has 18 years of experience as an educator in Operations Research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has a long-standing commitment to the development of professional knowledge and skills in subjects and programs of study relating to Operations Resarch. Layna's research interests centre on the development of graduate attributes, the effective use of technology in teaching and learning, and dynamic optimisation, in particular, applications of optimal control to finance and management. Uri SchlafrigDeputy ChairpersonUri Schlafrig keeps himself busy thinking of ways to create better railway systems of the future. In his current role as a consultant with Systemwide, Uri uses different forms of quantitative analysis to give advice on future rail infrastructure that is listened to by the highest levels of government planning and policy. He is dedicated to using Operations Research techniques to improve the efficiency and promote the use of public transport networks. Uri holds a Graduate Diploma in Operations Research from the University of Technology, Sydney and has also received Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Science from Sydney's Macquarie University.
