| One
of the 1904 'Standard Cigarettes' cards, this one featuring
Hercules Vollugi. Hercules played 70 games for Essendon between
1901 and 1906. |
Another 'Standard Cigarettes' card, this
time from 1910. W Sewart played with Essendon from 1904-15 for
171 games. He was also on the Essendon committee for 4 years
between 1908 and 1914. |
| |
|
| In 1922, Magpie Cigarettes released its 'Real
Photos' series featuring actual photographs rather than illustrations
of the players. Syd (Sidney) Barker shown here played 57 games
between 1921 and 1924. |
The 1933 'Standard Cigarettes" series
featured caricatures of the players, such as this wonderful
Keith Forbes issue. Forbes played 152 games and represented
Victoria in interstate carnivals as a rover and forward. |

|
| Norm McDonald was the first Aborigine to
play for the Essendon Football club and may well be the first
to be featured on an Aussie Rules Football card with this 1949
Kornies card. McDonald was a wonderful player over 128 games
and won a best and fairest in 1951 while playing in the same
side as both Bill Hutchison and John Coleman. |
This John Coleman card is a 1954 Kornies
card. Note the size difference between the 1949 series (left)
and this. The original 'Konies' cards were similiar in size
to previous cigarette cards while this newer size is closer
to what we are more familiar with today. |
| |
|
This is the John Coleman card from the 1954
'Coles' collection. Coles made all sorts of cards available
through their stores, including what are now some of the most
sought after cards in AFL memorabilia. |
The Argus Newspaper offered a series of cards,
this one from 1954 showing dual Brownlow medalist and 7 times
Best & Fairest winner Bill Hutchison. |

|
| This 1964 Scanlens card features Ken Fraser
with his name misprinted on the front, but amazingly enough
printed correctly on the back. Fraser played 198 games and kicked
156 goals during his 11 year career and was named a life member
of the club in 1967. |
This card is actually one of the 'Cut Outs'
that had to be cut from the back of Corn Flakes boxes during
1971. For cards that were literally cut from old cereal boxes,
these cards can go for upwards of $20. Barry Davis played 218
games for Essendon including 40 as captain from 1970-1971. |
| |
|
| This is one of the 1978 Scanlens cards, featuring
Essendon's third player to reach the 300 game milestone behind
Dick Reynolds and Simon Madden. Gary Foulds played exactly 300
games for the Dons between 1974 and 1989. While Foulds never
won a Best & Fairest, he is still regarded as one of the
clubs great players. |
Darren 'Daisy' Williams almost never made
it at Essendon, After playing his first game in 1979, Daisy
had to wait until 1983 to play his second. His recall was due
largely to Sheedy looking for more pace, something Williams
showed in style during the 84 and 85 premierships. This is the
1989 card, although the only other 'Daisy' card, a 1988 Scanlens
has the same photo, just with a different border. |

|
| This is the 1996 Select Matthew Lloyd card,
personally signed by the current glamour full forward. This
card is Lloyd's rookie card, a common reference to any first
card to feature a player. |
Redemption cards, such as this 1998 Dean
Solomon draft pick, have changed the face of the card collecting
hobby with a limited number of these cards made available from
the manufacturer. This Dean Solomon card marks his drafting
by the club as one of the top 16 picks. |

|
| The Team 2001 and Team 2002 cards are widely
available, but this card is actually from a 2000 set that was
never released. Luckily we have a full set of the 2000 series.
As few as 5 of each team might have been made making them the
rarest of any current era cards. |
With the 2000 premiership victory came a
large range of cards to commemorate the win. This is one of
the 'Commemorative set' of 2000 boxes that were released. We
have managed to get every card signed by its featured player.
This card features Dean Wallis who kept the club tradition of
'Hard Men' alive in the mold of Ronnie Andrews, Bill Duckworth
and others. |
|
|
| In 2001, Select released 50 cards
of each team captain. As the reigning premiership captain and
Norm Smith medalist, the James Hird card quickly became the
most sought after of these. Nowadays, these Hird signature captain
cards are extremely hard to find and attract bids of $1,000+
on ebay when traded. Normally the player will receive one of
the limited cards, and usually this will be the player's jumper
number, so in reality there are really only 49 of these Hird
cards in circulation, with Jimmy unlikely to ever offer No.5
of 50 to the market. |
 |
| One of the 2002 Select cards,
this is a new "Brownlow contender' card. Once again this
card has been personally signed by Jason Johnson who had not
actually seen the card before he was asked to sign it one training
session early in the 2002 season. Most of the Essendon players
are very good about signing cards, even Hird & Lloyd who
are asked relentlessly for their autographs after every appearance
or training session. |
