ISSUE  NINE April 2001

It makes us glad that some people have woken up enough to elect Natasha Stott Despoya as leader of the Democrats. Now at last we might hear a voice who says something that matters! Many of us will be watching to see if this might become a party we will vote for in the November elections. Good on you Natasha. We would have liked to see Andrew Barlett as deputy leader but let's hope Aden Ridgeway will be encouraged to be a bit less conservative and say more things he really means. Check out the Protest Weakly's Links to send congratulatory emails to these politicians.

Who's ready for all the lies you'll hear before the Federal Election? Please remember the history of this government. They'll say ANYTHING to get re-elected. Don't believe a word of the rhetoric. They will renege on every promise like they always do. Listen to the people who are bravely trying to shout the truth; the pensioners; the homeless; the charities; welfare recipients and good people who care about the direction our society is heading.

At least some enlightened journalists have stopped using the term "illegal immigrants" to describe the people seeking asylum in Australia. They come here by any means they can, in the mistaken belief that here they can find solace and safety. This means they are safely locked up in detention centres behind bars and barbed wire and treated like criminals. The Australian government holds the belief that all people of the world are not entitled to the same rights. If you steal land from its indigenous peoples you can then say it's yours and no-one else gets to share it. Who gave this land to this government? We say it's common theft.
