I have chosen to dedicate this page of my website to the guru of science...

THE AMAZING DR KARL!!

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki broadcasts over the radio airwaves once a week, on Australia's ABC Radio network. During his shows (he is on air, in total, from 11am to 5:30pm, on several individual programs), he bombards his eager listeners with all manner of scientific facts and useful trivia, from the sublime to the ridiculous. From the mechanics behind 3-D pictures to how asparagus can make your urine smell like sulphur, it's all there, and more often than not, Dr Karl knows all about it. However, he doesn't patronise his listeners, and will readily admit if he does not know an answer, with the promise that he will look it up himself as "homework". He's the best thing to happen to science since the Curiosity Show, and he doesn't even wear a skivvy:-) His infectious love of science seemingly knows no bounds, and you can't help but get excited along with him. And during his trip to the US, in late 1997, he was asked onto the Letterman show, so it may not be too long before non-Aussies can also experience the enthusiasm for science that Dr Karl spreads wherever he goes. It's no wonder he was recognised by Sydney University as carrying on the vital work of Julius Sumner Miller, who encouraged us all to ask "Why is it so??"

A few years ago, my sister and I were lucky enough to meet Dr Karl at the radio station in Sydney from where his weekly call-in programs are broadcast across Australia. Hint: he's the one in the striped shirt:-)

Unfortunately the tall blonde behind Dr Karl is not me - it's my sister. I'm the short brunette in the glasses to the left of him:-) Not my best look I'm afraid.

This was the message he wrote on the back of the photo when my dad took it in to show him:

Translation: "To Felicia and Stephanie, Ask an impertinent question and you are on the way to a pertinent answer. Best wishes".
