Once upon a time, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich wrote a cute little movie about a giant Egyptian annulus (that's a ring, folks:-)) which served as the opening to a quantum phenomenon known as a wormhole that could theoretically transport someone to the other side of the galaxy. And so the story went that an archaeologist/linguist named Daniel Jackson (James Spader), with his vast knowledge of Egyptology, solved the puzzle of how to open this "door to heaven". Together with Colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell), a tough army man bitter from the accidental death of his son, Daniel was sent through the gate, ending up on the desert planet of Abydos. The culture of the planet mirrored that of Ancient Egypt - providing proof that the gate found on Earth was once activated, and used to transport people of that time to Abydos where they served as slaves to an evil alien race. Long story short: mayhem ensued, right won out and Jack along with his team of soldiers returned home without Daniel, who stayed behind to live amongst the people of Abydos, including his wife/gift Shau'ri. And they all lived happily ever after - or until someone at MGM television thought "Hey, this would make a great show" ...

Fast forward one year (in TV time that is), Jack (having metamorphosed into TV's MacGyver :-) ) has retired, and the Stargate, which has been dormant since Jack and his team returned, suddenly comes to life. Enter a race of alien parasites known as the Goa'uld - who leave their calling card, before exiting through the gate with a "souvenir". Jack, being the leader of the only previous mission through the gate, is recalled to duty, as are his original team. They are to return to Abydos and bring the Goa'uld to justice, with the help of the world's leading expert on the Stargate, Theoretical Astrophysicist Captain Samantha Carter - who was promoted to Major in season 3. Upon arriving on Abydos, Jack is reunited with Daniel (10 years younger and a lot cuter than in the movie :-) ), who shares his discovery that, contrary to previous belief, there is actually a vast network of Stargates - meaning travel to virtually anywhere in the galaxy, instead of merely between Earth and Abydos, is possible. Trouble ensues and Shau'ri (now called Sha're) is taken prisoner by the Goa'uld. Daniel, Jack and Sam mount a rescue mission to reclaim her, and along the way Teal'c, an alien warrior who once served the Goa'uld, joins them in their quest to learn about other worlds. Under the command of General George Hammond and the medical care of Dr Janet Fraiser, the four explorers form the team SG-1 and the rest is history. As a final note, it would be unfair of me not to at least mention that, in season 6, SG-1 are joined by alien scientist/diplomat Jonas Quinn (played by Corin Nemec) after the unfortunate departure of Daniel Jackson in the tear-jerker episode Meridian:-( (Read more about this on my Daniel page - or follow the link on the "Welcome Back Daniel" banner at the bottom of this page)

OK, so that's the "Readers Digest" version (as Jack would say), none of which really gives an indication of how good a show it is and why it appeals to me. Oh, where to begin....
