Modern Talking Australia

I have created this website to pay homage to one of the best bands in the world, who performed throughout the 1980's, 1990's and even Today, in the mid 2000's.

How I Discovered Modern Talking

When I was a Student at high school in 1986, I was teaching a Vietnamese refugee English 2 days per week, after school, and he invited me to come back to his house, at which point he took me next door to meet his neighbour. I first heard MODERN TALKING at this guys place. It was "ATLANTIS IS CALLING" and when I heard it I loved this kind of music straight away., it was just such a fantastic song. This guy had the 1st Album and the 3rd Album (Records only, no CD's back then in Australia), and we played both of them and drank beer while we talked, and listened to the music.

The next time we met up, he invited me to go Roller skating, as he said there were lots of girls at the Roller skating Rink, ( which was upstairs at the Fun Factory in Toorak, Melbourne. ), and he said they play the latest Disco/ Dance music form Europe there, so yes, they played a few Modern Talking songs too, and I enjoyed the Rollerskating, the Music and the Girls too. We would quite often crash nito girls by accident and then land on top of them or vise-versa. Anyway it was a fun way to meet the opposite sex. lol.

I went looking to buy the Modern Talking Albums but could only find them at Victoria market , and they were Double the price of all other Albums, and saddly I could not afford this at the time as I was a full time student. By the time I had saved up enough and went back to the market, about a month later, the shop no longer sold Modern Talking because there was not enough demand in Australia for there Albums. The radio stations in this country never played Modern Talking, and I used to Listen quite often when I was young. I only once heard the song "Jet Airliner" and that was about it.

Also Discos in Melbourne did not play much Modern talking. Sure they would play maybe "Cheri Cheri lady" once for the whole night and maybe even "Brother Loui" but that was quite rare. I was so frustrtated and Angry with the radio stations & DJ's at the time because no one was giving them Air Play. Then one day my friend took me to a Disco and it was ASIAN night, (and I am not Asian!!!!) so I was worried that I may get bashed or I may get kicked out. But in reality it was one of the best nights I ever had, The DJ played at least 12 Modern talking songs over the space of 3 hours and lots of other very good 80's European Dance music.

A few days later I went shopping in Richmond, Melbourne. and I was amazed that so many shops were playing Modern Talking and CC Cash songs, as background music. Some Shops even had speakers mounted on the doorway of the shop and were blasting "Cheri Cheri Lady" and many other of their songs onto the passers by.

About a week after this another one of my friends heard me playing Modern talking music and he went crazy at me, asking questions, he said "WHO ARE THEY... WHAT IS THIS... it is Fantastic... I have heard these songs before and I Love them". I asked him where the hell had he heard so many Modern Talking songs ? He told me that he had just come back from a Holiday where he was visiting relatives in GREECE, and he said he has wonderful memories of the Discos and Family parties that he had over there on his holiday where he experienced this sensational music.

So it seemed that many people in the Australian Asian community and anyone who had visited Europe, knew about the fantastic songs created by Modern Talking. But when I went up to the average person on the street and asked them about Modern talking they did not know what I was talking about. like I said, sadly they did not get enough Air Play on Australian Radio stations and as a result most people have never heard of them. I am also not sure if their music would appeal to the mainstream people in this country also.

This is not the first time a Northern European Music group has produced very high quality music.

Rememeber ABBA ? They also produced romantic songs & tunes that made you feel all warm & fuzzy inside.

So although Modern Talking produced very high quality tunes, they did not get enough advertising in Australia and I am sure this is why they did not take off here. This lack of advertising is also partially their own fault for not making any effort to push themselves in remote places like OZ or even the USA. As mopst of my friends in the USA have never heard of Modern Talking either !!

I also remember my older brother used to laugh at me for Listening to them, he said that they sound like a bunch of Girls, and he used to laugh at their poor English grammer, which is only apparent in one or two small sections of one or two songs. I also was not sure if they were Male or Female the first time I heard them, but at the end of the day, who really cares about that. They are fantastic singers & Song Writers, and I hope they keep producing this top Qulaity music.
