Snail Potholder
4 ply worsted weight yarn-2 ozs MC; 1 oz CC; small amounts of red for mouth, black for eyes and brown for body trim and feelers.
Crochet hook size H-8
10" wide and 9" high.

I also did this Snail in Lustre Sheen and is coaster size. Works up really well in either.

Back: With purple, ch2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do NOT join this rnd or foll. rnds. Cont. work in a spiral, marking beg of each rnd.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12sc)
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (18sc)
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc *, rep from * to * around (24sc)
Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc *, rep from * to * around (30sc)
Rnd 6: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc *, rep from * to * around (36sc)
Rnd 7: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc *, rep from * to * around (42sc)

Front Body Embroidery: With brown, starting bet Rnd 2 and Rnd 3, chain st a spiral working bet rnds of sc, continuing spiral bet Rnds 4 and 5, then bet Rnds 6 and 7, 8 and 9 and so on, ending bet Rnds 12 and 13. Leave other piece of Body (back) unworked.
At end of rnd, ch 20, then sl st Back into Body to form hanger. Fasten off.
Head: With CC, ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join. Work in spiral as before.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12sc)
Rnd 3: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (18sc)
Rnds 4-7: Sc in each sc, around (18sc)
Rnd 8: *Dec 1 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next sc * rep from * twice more (12 sc)
Rnd 9 - 13: Sc in each sc around (12 sc)
Rnd 14: *Dec 1 sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sc * rep from * around (10sc)
Rnds 15-29: Sc in each sc around (10sc)
Close Opening: Flatten open end , working through the double thickness, sc opening closed. Fasten off, leaving a 16" length. Sew Head to side of Body, folding bottom edge back and under Body piece.
Feelers: (make 2): With brown, ch 7. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each rem ch st. Sew to top of Head about 1/2" apart.
Face: With red, ch st a smile. With black, make 2 small straight sts for eyes.
Tail: With CC, ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join. Work in a spiral as before.
Rnds 2 - 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each rem sc around (10sc at end of last rnd)
Rnd 6: Sc in next 4 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc
Rnd 7: Sl st in next 4 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sl st in next 4 sts. Fasten off, leaving an 8" length. Sew in place at bottom back end of Body with the 2 hdc sts at bottom.
