Thread Towel Topper

Crochet thread #10. I used South Maid. One ball makes many.
Size 7 steel hook.
1 cotton kitchen towel.
5/8" button.
Gauge 13 "X sts" and 13 rows = 4"
Join rnds with sl st unless otherwise stated.
Cross-st (x st) = sk next 2 successive unworked sts, dc in next st, ch 1, dc in first of 2 sk sts.
Cut towel in half and zigzag edges then gather across top and pull to measure 5 + 1/2" across.

Towel Top: Row 1: work 58 sc evenly across top of towel, turn.
Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), [x-st over next 3 sc] rep across, turn. (19 x-sts)
Row 3: (dec row): ch 3, sk first x-st, [dc in ch 1 sp of next x-st, ch 1, dc in 2nd dc to right of last dc made], rep across, ending with dc in 3rd ch of beg ch 3. (18 x-sts)
Rows 4-14: Rep row 3. (7 x-sts at end of row 14)
Row 15: Ch 4 (counts as first dc, ch 1 throughout), sk first x-st, [dc in ch 1 sp on next x st, ch 1, dc in 2nd dc to right of last dc make], rep across, ending with dc in 3rd ch of beg ch3, turn. (6 x-sts)
Row16: Ch 4, sk first x-st, [dc in ch 1 sp of next x-st, ch 1, dc in 2nd to right of last dc made], rep across, ending with dc in 3rd ch of beg ch 4, ch 1, sk next ch to right of last dc made, dc in next dc, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch 4, turn (6 x-sts)
Rows 17-27: Rep row 16.
Row28: Ch 4, sk first x-st, *[dc in ch 1 sp of next x-st, ch 1, dc in 2nd dc to right of last dc made] twice*, ch 3, sk next x-st, rep from * to * twice, ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 4, turn.
Row 29: ch 1, sk sl st, sc in each of next 11 sts, [ ch 1, hdc, ch 1] in next st, sc in eachof next 11 sts, fasten off.
Strip for back: Row 1: Ch 59, sc in 58; ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in 58 sc; ch 1, turn.
Row 3: rep row 2.
Row 4: Sc in 58 sc; turn. Sc both strips tog. matching sts....leaving one long end open. Hand sew this to towel topper at back, tucking in the gathered edge as you go.
