Google is used by about 80% of the online world, so optimise your site for Google first. The difficult thing is that Google regularly changes the way it ranks web sites. Although each new method they use is not dramatically different from the previous one over time it pays to adjust your site from time to time for best performance. Google never divulge the public what these incremental changes are for two reasons.

Google uses over 100 criteria to index web sites, but some of the mainstays of web site search engine optimisation are:

Alt Tags on images
Correct anchor text on links
Links to and from you site from other important complimentary sites (industry bodies are good)
Correct title text
Meta tags
Meta descriptions
Use Heading 1 (H1), bold, italic, and bulleted text wisely
Have key phrases throughout content and at the tops of pages (in H1 text if possible)
Update content regularly, Google sees regularly changing sites as more important than those with static content.
