The Marketing Shrew has a problem. We're taking part in a careers expo on Wednesday, and the Cow-orker (being part of Marketing, and with nothing actually useful to do) will be helping to man our stall and, as always, she's excited at the prospect of getting a free T-shirt to wear.
The trouble is that there are no shirts in the Cow-orker's size. The Cow-orker and the Marketing Shrew are both firm believers in the power of the branded image, however, so she must wear a too-small t-shirt for market day. And the Cow-orker, as experience has shown, is more than happy to keep wearing free t-shirts that are too small for her ...
However the Marketing Shrew is less happy about this and either doesn't know how to suggest that the Cow-orker not wear clothers to work which are too small for her or, more likely, has tried hinting just that only to have it fall on deaf ears.
So she resorts to trickery, telling the Cow-orker: "We have no shirts in your size, so you can only borrow one to wear for the day. And then you have to give it back."
And as feeble a trick as this is (how is borrowing a t-shirt that's too small any different from wearing one that's too small but owned by her? Who will she give it back to, and what would anyone - even Marketing - want with a used, stretched t-shirt?), it works.
