12 Monkeys RANK=335

Category : SciFi
Description :
Another sick and twisted movie from the director of Brazil.
Bruce Willis is sent back through time to study the cause of a massive plague that wiped out most of the world's population. The plot/ending takes advantage of the paradoxes of time travel.
Brad Pitt is SUPERB as the deranged man who holds the key to Willis' success/failure.

2001 : A Space Odyssey RANK=274

Category : SciFi
Description :
In one sentence: Monoliths of unearthly origins are responsible for directly stimulating the evolution of life into qualitatively distinct and successively superior forms.
The movie opens with the Dawn of Man, showing the exact moment at which early apes began their violent ascent into human form. The remainder of the movie is concerned with what happens to a small crew of astronauts returning from having made contact with a new monolith found on the moon in the year 2001. Looks like we're behind schedule!

I had always held 2001ASO in fairly high regard, and its 25th anniversary rerelease back in March gave me a chance to see it again but this time on the big screen and with more critical eyes.
This supposed "classic" is a powerful idea, well scripted and adequately acted, but completely overshadowed by its mundane, meandering, mechanistic manner.
I can highly recommend reading Clarke's original short story "The Sentinel" upon which 2001 was based. The novel is also worth a look. The movie is not.

28 Days Later RANK=800

Category : Thriller
Description :
A virus escapes from a laboratory in England and quickly leads to a pandemic.
The virus causes its human host to become a crazed bloodthirsty animal within 20 seconds of contamination, seeking out fresh victims to bite and tear and so pass on the virus via blood. The Infected, as they are called, are hideous zombies with red eyes and pale skin and let out a ghastly hissing noise when enraged.

This thriller is a great film, but naturally not in a wholesome way! This movie got to me, I mean it's seriously creepy. It's particularly insidious in how it tries to trick you into relaxing at soome points, thinking that things will be okay for a while, just before it sucker-punches you with another scare.

Early in the movie we are introduced to the main character Tom who awakes from a coma in a hospital bed 28 days after the epidemic began.

28 Days compares very favourably with other movies that had a similar plot, such as 12 Monkeys, Outbreak, and Resident Evil. Outbreak took too much of a laidback view, and was more from the General's viewpoint on the hill as opposed to the view from the trenches, so to speak.
12 Monkeys had a marvellously twisted plot but mixed in some humour, whereas 28 Days has virtually none. Resident Evil was more action than thriller, perhaps owing this to its origins as a video game.

See it late at night like I did... and try not to be afraid of the dark afterwards. ];-)

A.I. RANK=961

Category : SciFi
Description :
A landmark film.

This film achieves excellence on so many levels. The visual and musical production is perfect, of course. More than presentation though is the storyline. The film addresses many poigniant questions about why we would want true AIs and how humans and AIs would react to each other.
The story begins with a project to create an AI capable of love - a mechanical child for a couple whose own son is hopelessly in a coma.
The only rough patch I could spot was the explanation of the one-day limitation near the end - you'll see what I mean. It's not that the explanation was assertive hogwash (and it was), only that no explanation was really needed and that it sticks out like a sore manipulator.

Extremely thought-provoking, and clever. The ending seems somewhat unsatisfying, but therein lies the real message. A movie about Artificial Intelligence will always really be about the human condition.

Description :
Jim Carrey was born to play this role. Gotta be.
This is hilarious.
It's gotta be an all time classic.
Basically you either love or hate Jim Carrey.
So you'll either hate this movie or, as I do, love it.

Ali G InDaHouse RANK=17

Category : Comedy
Description :
Wrong. Wrong Wrong. Feral.
I honestly advise you not to see this movie.
There's only three funny jokes in the whole movie and I'll tell you them now so you aren't even tempted to contaminate your mind with this piece of filth.
#1 -
Ali G crosses the floor to push the leader of the opposition back into his chair.
Speaker: "Sergeant at Arms, expel that man at once!"
Ali G: "Is it because I'm black?"
#2 -
P.M. (Referring to Ali's embarassing performance in Parliament house): "It's all over the newspapers. Can you believe it?"
Ali G (Reading front page): "There's a dog wot can play tennis?"
#3 -
Ali G's gang are standing side-by-side holding hands when a surge of electricity starting at the head of the row causes each person in turn to do a breakdance style ripple from left to right, all the way along the human chain.

And THAT was the pick of the bunch.
The only reason I've even gone to the trouble of writing so many words about this dramatic lowpoint in 21st century cinema is that I had actually been expecting great things of this movie. Ali G's TV show was great in small doses because he really was behaving badly towards famous people - not actors pretending to be offended. Although Ali G is ultimately a fictional character played by an actor, I still wish Ali G really had kept it real. Sacha Cohen does have some talent for satire, but this movie gives no opportunity for him to use it. Instead us Ali G fans were given a frightfully feral sack of genital jokes, toliet humour, sex crazed antics and dull try-hard scenes.

Nil respect to Sacha Cohen for one of da most base and most awful movies I've ever seen.
Don't "check it!"

Alien RANK=652

Category : SciFi
Description :
The first of the Aliens series.
I'm a bit unfamiliar with this one.
A space mining cargo crew including Ripley) discovers a crashed alien ship. An examination of one of the dead alien crew members indicates it died from something that burst out of it.
Then they discover a bunch of eggs. An egg opens and a facesucker bursts out and infects one of the team.
Well from then on the usual happens.
I remember it involves Ripley going back to rescue her cat when she could have easily escaped by herself.
Surprisingly, the sequel was actually better!
A very good space aliens movie.

Update 25/11/2003 : The remastered "Director's Cut" has been released in cinemas, so I made my pilgrimage to see it. If there's any bloody difference between this and the original then I didn't notice it. You'd have to do a shot-by-shot comparison to figure that out, the cheats.
Was still great to see on the big screen in surround sound. Still scared me even though I'd seen it twice before!
"Microchanges in air density, my ass." ("Right.")

Alien Resurrection RANK=843

Category : SciFi
Description :
I haven't fully figured out what the storyline was to this, so maybe I should leave it up to you so as not to spoil it.
Christy's guns are good, so is the basketball scene and the aliens swimming underwater.
I really hope this is the last of the Aliens movies.
Don't get me wrong - I liked it.

Aliens RANK=909

Category : SciFi
Description :
The BEST of the aliens series of movies.
WO Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is retrieved from her escape pod by a deep space salvage team after 50 years of hypersleep. Her story of the predatory aliens prompts a military mission to return to the planet on which they were first encountered to eradicate them.
Hot weapons, awesome creature effects, spooky atmosphere, attention to detail and cool sound effects make this an SF classic.
