Aliens 3 RANK=461

Category : SciFi
Description :
Ripley crashes down on a prison planet.
She has inadvertantly brought a facesucker with her in the escape pod. Extra tension is added because she is the only female in an all-male prison.
The alien has mutated into an even faster and more evil-looking critter. There's only one alien - not hordes of `em.
Not too bad.

Along Came A Spider RANK=752

Category : Thriller
Description :
Some quality work if I've ever seen any.
It's a detective thriller that succeeds on both counts.

Morgan Freeman is back as detective Alex Cross, and he continues the successful formula of the methodical old cop temporarily partnered with a pretty young thing to solve a baffling case. The formula doesn't extend any deeper though, with one major plot twist near the end to throw you off just when you thought the ending would be only a matter of time. It was good to see a thriller which at one point has all of the characters not knowing what is going to happen next - a point where there is no momentum but only uncertainty.
Nice one.

Only one quirky thing stood out for me: how can steganography be the latest classroom cheating method when no typical classroom in the world has flatpanel LCD displays and steganography cryptosystems standard for every desk? Just me nitpicking I suppose. It's really hard to find anything seriously wrong with this movie.

American Beauty RANK=470

Category : Not Sure
Description :
Some what sentimental but realistic study of typical urban life. It's possible to identify with just about every character, which is pretty rare for a movie.
There's the middle aged guy who hates his job.
The stressed-out wife. The insecure daughter and her highly horny girlfriend. The weirdo next door and his renegade son.

I guess this is a drama, but you'll notice I refuse to have a Drama category in this database because every movie has some drama in it. Having a Drama category for movies is like having an Alternative category for music. It's meaningless.

Antitrust RANK=809

Category : SciFi
Description :
This movie is so on the mark it's not funny.
It gets so many little things right.
Some hot-shot programmer gets hired by the head (pseudo-Gates) of a big software company called Nurv (*cough*Microsoft*cough*) and has to code a critical module in the software that lets Nurv take over global communications. It isn't long before we find out that Nurv uses some highly questionable methods in dealing with potential competitors. In fact, the programmer begins to find there are a lot of things that are not as they seem.

Phillipe Ryan does a fairly good job of acting like a geek. The pace of the movie is fast enough, and the length is short enough to keep the non-geeks from walking out. There's a great plot twist about 2/3 way through that just changes your outlook on everything that has happened. Actually you can see the warning signs as early as the first scene when we first see the programmer and... his girlfriend. Definitely a giveaway there, although I may be projecting a bit too much there. :-(

It's certainly a sign of the times when Scott McNealy features as Himself in a movie. What a god. That only adds credibility to this movie, which has heaps already.

I can indentify with so much that goes on here. I think anyone who isn't in the industry and doesn't know what vibes are going on these days is going to be a bit mystified as to how it all ties together. The message at the end isn't something that is reinforced all the way through, it's just kindof tacked on - almost in a corny way like "and the moral of the story is... human knowledge belongs to everybody".
But I know what it's all about and that's what counts.

Antz RANK=165

Description :
Aside from the Comets'o'Death movies in 1998, there was also the battle of the Insect movies. First off the blocks was this earnest attempt from Dreamworks SKG.
This was mainly about a miserable little worker ant (voiced by Woody Allen) who ... well gee.. he saves the day and gets the girl. I mean, duh! As though it could be any other way!
I suppose you could say that it explores social issues of caste and segregation, but that would be stretching it.
Really this is a CGI-fest, and even in this regard it is overshadowed by the other Insect movie of that year.

There's some good lines, I think, somewhere.

OK, this movie was, in retrospect, largely a waste of time.

Armageddon RANK=248

Category : Action
Description :
This is the more gung-ho of the two Comets'o'Death movies of 1998. As my friend Lisa said, "I just HAVE to say that Deep Impact didn't have enough balls!" I can see her point, but you might want to see my review of Deep Impact for comparison.

A comet heads towards Earth and the big boys get out the big toys to tackle the problem head-on. Scientists and even engineers are too weeny for the task, so Uncle Sam gets some tough macho oil rig drillers to save the world instead.
Tough and macho is OK by me, but only when we're talking about a one-man-army like Arnie or 007. As soon as you get a bunch of tough guys trying to outdo each other as well as the common problem, it just becomes tedious.

The CGI is more visually impressive in this movie, but that's about it. I've put it in the Action category because so many laws of physics are violated that it doesn't deserve the Sci-Fi label.

Danny Devito stars in this funny and moving study of society and inequality. (Do I sound like a real critic, or what?) Somehow he gets roped into teaching some boot-camp misfits a classical education. Naturally, his class teaches him a lesson or two along the way.

Description :
Aden Quinn stars in this excellent spy action flick.
A navy officer discovers one day that he looks exactly like the terrorist known as "Carlos the Jackal". He is recruited by the CIA to train as a spy with the hope that he can impersonate The Jackal and set a trap.
Solid characters. A story I care about. Who could ask for more?

Attack of The Clones RANK=939
Star Wars Episode 2
Category : Adventure
Description :
Check out the moves on Yoda! Woohoo!
Best part has to be Yoda using his lightsabre to kick Lord Dooku's butt. Naturally, Yoda's sword is green. :)

This instalment of the Star Wars phenomenon is undoubtedly better than Episode 1, primarily for the following five reasons:
1) No whiny little Anakin. Although 20-something Anakin still shows some temper tantrums every now and then. A big Dark Side of The Force giveaway there.
2) Minimal screen time spent on Jar-Jar, although he does put in an appearance, and he even does something REALLY IMPORTANT in this episode.
3) Excellent acting from Hayden Christensen and Ewen MacGregor. Christensen really could have messed this up, but the imbalance between order and chaos in him is placed appropriately. There's a few moments where the little mannerisms of Alec Guiness' Obi Wan shine out like a beacon in MacGregors's portrayal.
4) Natalie Portman's midriff. There, I said it. I was very confused about where she was keeping that big supply of different clothes that she was always changing into between scenes, so I was somewhat relieved when she started losing them. :-) And we didn't see her get into enough action in Episode 1.
5) Yoda spinning, dodging, lifting, running and fighting like he was only 200 again.

Interesting to see how the Clones came about, why they were created, what they obviously become in later episodes, and how awesome it looks when they attack en masse with laser bolts and rockets going off everywhere. Rockin'!

A few gripes. What the hell was the deal with that rushed backstory about Anakin's mother? I know the movie was long enough, but an extra 10 minutes spent on that part would have made the whole Skywalker family more comprehensible. Did we need to see Jack Thomson playing the part of Anakin's stepfather? This was done only so that we see the connection between Owen, Beru and Luke in episode 4? Why bother? If Luke tells us that Owen is his uncle, why can't we just believe him and leave it at that? On the other hand that whole Tattooine sequence could have been much worse.
And where did R2D2's new special ability come from? We never saw that before, and there's plenty of times he could have used it in Eps 4,5,6 and he didn't. Still good thing he did that or else we'd have missed more of Amidala.

Of course everything about this movie is big. Big sets, big action, big tear in Amidala's top. Gosh did I say that again?
The other big thing is the plot. There's a LOT happening in this episode. I found it a tad tricky to figure out the motives of some groups, and to remember who was supporting who.

Some quotes to remember : "I've got a bad feeling about this.", "Oh, this is not good", and my favourite "This party's over!"

Bad Girls RANK=87

Category : Western
Description :
If you want to make a Western movie, do not make it like this. Westerns are about tough men in tough boots and big hats riding around shooting each other for piracy and revenge.
Westerns should *not* be about 4 cutesy-pie whores swanning about in knee-highs wanting to get even with a unduly harsh former customer and lifting their skirt where possible.
Entertaining? Maybe.
Corny and titillating? Definitely.
A good Western? Nope.
