Shower RANK=578

Category : Not Sure
Description :
Deep drama from China about a high flying business man in big city who has neglected his relationship with his rural-dwelling father and brother. One day he receives a pictorial letter from his brother, who is intellectually handicapped, which appears to say that his father has died.
He journeys back out to his old home in a country village and expects the worst.

The setting is mostly the village bath house, which has father owned and operated. The tension between the family members is nicely offset by the humour coming from some of the bath house's colourful long-term regular patrons.
The version I saw was broadcast free-to-air on SBS and had subtitles.

There's a brief substory which takes place out in the Gobi desert, in a village where water is so precious that it is traded drop-for-drop with grain. It's a scene so diametrically opposed to the bath house that you wonder what the connection is... but of course there is one, and it turns out to be the main theme of the movie. Our family is important, and the sacrifices we must make for our family are sometimes very great.

The solid characters, the understated acting, the slow earthy village and the relaxing aura of the bath house have been combined with simple camera work and an honest script to make Shower a very touching film.

Shrek RANK=217

Category : Comedy
Description :
What impressed me most was the detail and motion of the computer generated imagery. Not too bad at all, especially the slime in the swamp scene at the beginning.
The dialogue is very funny in places, but... uh.. well..
OK, I admit it.
I HATED THE DONKEY.
THE DONKEY MUST DIE.
THINK OF JAR-JAR-BINKS, BUT INSTEAD ONLY MUCH MORE ANNOYING AND PATHETIC. At least Jar-Jar was kindof funny in a self-deprecating way. But I just wanted to shoot Eddie Murphy by the end of this.
The Matrix ripoff fight scene was mind-numbingly gratuitous and I have no respect for so-called "artists" who can't release something without copying what's popular.

Signs RANK=891

Category : Thriller
Description :
Crop circles are signs... of something.
Excellent thriller film from the indian director whose name has dimensions slightly longer than my phonetic memory.
The Sixth Sense man. You know. Turns out the guy has acting aspirations too, and he plays a strategically important but temporally stunted role in this movie.

There are a couple of absolutely creepy moments in here, and I don't want to say anything other than "The kids' birthday party on TV".
There's actually a lot going on in here, and it's a credit to the script that so much is accomplished in so little time without it becoming a mishmash of confusion and overstatement. The main threads are the main character (Mel Gibson) and his grievances for his dead wife, his asthmatic son, and of course... The Threat.

My predjudice going into this movie was that Mel wouldn't have enough depth to make the movie work. Indeed there are a few moments when the best he can manage is to swallow melodramatically. However, overall Gibson conducted himself firmly and powerfully, and thankfully didn't let the side down. Top effort, Mel, mate.

Try not to spill your popcorn in the basement scene.
That "clawing moment" actually made me gasp with fright, and I can't remember the last time a movie frightened me that much.
See, it's no holds barred on Andrew's Web Page! :-)

The Sixth Day RANK=848

Category : SciFi
Description :
Excellent and nicely thought out sci-fi action with Arnold Schwarzneggar. This movie is engaging because of storyline, a plot twist, and topical subject matter.
There's also a cool snowy canyon flight scene with some awesome futuristic WhisperJets.
Arnie is a WhisperJet pilot who gets cloned by the morally unsound boss of a Big Biotech Company. His clone takes over his life leaving Arnie out in the cold and his family none the wiser. Arnie wants his life back, so he has to track down clues and kick some arse too.
Good one.

The Sixth Sense RANK=926

Category : Thriller
Description :
You'll NEVER guess how this film ends.
Not in a million years.
Damn what a twist!
It's not just another "Bruce Willis and A Kid" movie, because in this one the kid totally outdoes Bruce Willis.
If an Australian actor stars in a hollywood movie then I think I'm supposed to say so and say how good they are. Well Toni Colette plays the kid's mum... and not too badly either.

This one is SERIOUSLY creepy at times
I see dead people!

Space Station 3D RANK=704

Category : Adventure
Description :
This is an IMAX documentary, so I'm not sure if it really belongs here. But hey, it's in 3D and I saw it in a cinema in Melbourne so that's good enough for me.

This flick was awesome. The copius mechanoerotic shots of connectors, airlocks, cables, rocket launches, VR demos, pipes, polished aluminum struts, robot arms, masses of wiring and insanely complicated designs all combined to give me that smug space cadet feeling that lasted the whole day. Aerospace chubbs me up. :-D

The sense of depth is good. The detail on that 5 storey screen is fantastic, to the point that you can be watching the Space Shuttle in the background and still read the labels on the wires in the foregroud. Great doco.

Spawn RANK=957

Category : Action
Description :
AWESOME visual effects, HARD weapons, and GROOVY music and intro make this my ULTIMATE EFFECTS MOVIE OF 1997 !! The costumes are nice. The clown is funny.
A hired killer is killed (becomes Spawn) and signs a pact with The Devil to be able to see his wife again as long as he leads Hell's armies into battle against Good. A wise-looking old man on the side of Good regularly appears trying to convince the Spawn to break his pact and be good.
The plot is a bit silly, but who really gives a flying fruit loop?
If you like CGI, you will want to have this movie's baby!

Species 2 RANK=143

Category : SciFi
Description :
While things are finally starting to even out, it's still a man's world that we live in. Even so, I have to say there are times when being a bloke can be a rough deal. Times like the time I decided to see Species 2 simply because Natasha Henstridge was a looker.
Boy was I had.
There is simply not enough nudy shots of this chick to compensate for the cardboard plot, ceramic acting and distinct taste of plaster that this movie leaves you with.

Avoid the movie.
Download Natasha off the `Net instead (hey that's what it was built for).
