Speed 2 RANK=26
Cruise Control
Category : Action
Description :
I watched this on TV one night more out of morbid curiosity than anything else. I knew the movie was going to die an awful death - I had already heard opinions like that - but I still wanted to know how and why.
Some questions are best left unanswered.
This is yet another mind-numbingly apalling action movie from Hollywood. The director, Jan de Bont, should be dragged naked through hot coals for sinking this flick.
The dialogue is at worst irritating and at best irrelevant. In an action movie this is usually no problem, BUT in this movie even some of the ACTION scenes are BORING.
Aside from the usual physical impossibilities (which at times border on farcical) there is poor sound mixing and amateurish framing. I can't stomach thinking about this movie any more, sorry.

Sphere RANK=535

Description :
A twisted, eventhorizonish, underwater thriller.
A crashed spaceship is found in 1000 ft of water and a team is sent down to investigate. At the centre is a golden Sphere, whose mysterious powers drive the events in the movie.

Saw this on 9/4/98.

Spider-Man RANK=930

Category : SciFi
Description :
Swishhhh swisshhh! Damn I wish I was Spider-Man.
I was never a big fan of comic books and I didn't really have any affinity for any of the superheroes either. For me, the Spider-Man movie was going where I had never gone before, and I loved it.

Some people I've talked to thought that it was ruined by the smoochy tender scenes. As to why adding Kirsten Dunst to a movie can ever be a bad thing I can only guess. Really, the emotional and human relationship aspect of the story is the most important aspect of Spider-Man. With great power comes great responsibility, and the weight of Spider-Man's responsibility is immense. The way it ends in the cemetary is a strange mix of sadness and pride, a noble sacrifice that you ttally wish that he did not have to make, even though the logic behind it is irrefutable. This movie is not for your average spotty-faced comic book reader - it's better than that.

Why do I want to be Spider-Man? Shooting spider webs is so cool. Not to mention, I save the day AND get the girl. Basically this movie can't go wrong because it has enough chick-flick moments in it to keep the girls from walking out, and the rest of it is a male fantasy acted out with solidity and style.

Spy Game RANK=700

Category : Thriller
Description :
Lots of momentum and good acting in this spy rescue story, starring Robert Redford as the wisened old spook and Brad Pitt as his younger and idealistic new CIA recruit.
The new recruit tries his own unauthorised mission. It doesn't go according to plan, which leaves old Red (who is 1 day away from retirement) in a very awkward position.
There's lots going on and you're always wondering how its going to end up.
It's not how you play the game; It's how the game plays you.

The Final Frontier
Category : SciFi
Description :
The one with a cult leader who (amongst other things) leads Kirk & Co. to meet God.
Yep. Rather corny.
Good thing it wasn't the final final frontier or else we may never have gotten First Contact.

The Undiscovered Country
Category : SciFi
Description :
Members of a Klingon diplomatic misson are murdered by an unknown assasin while guest of captain Kirk, who is promptly captured by the Klingons and sentenced to work in the dilithium mines of a prison planet.
Needless to say, escape and revenge are high on JK's priorities.
Not sure when I first saw this.

Star Trek Insurrection RANK=65

Category : SciFi
Description :
Picard and crew travel to some pissy little planet that we don't care about and then uncover some rude and interfering behaviour by Miscellaneous Space Bad Guys.
There's some shooting followed by the usual sneaky, non-violent and StarFleet-approved resolution to the problem.
Planet's inhabitants inhabit happily ever after. We're supposed to learn something about Immortality and Qualia that we don't already know from watching Doctor Who and from taking IC210 at UQ. Big deal. ;-)
There's some nice concepts, and good cloaking and morphing effects.

I saw this on New Year's Eve, 1998.
I saw the midnight fireworks while halfway across the Captain Cook bridge when driving home from the cinema.
