Facts about Alcoholism

Alcoholism is relatively easy to treat. The current contemporary approach for Alcoholism, namely entering a hospital chemical dependency unit for 28 days followed by participating in Alcoholics Anonymous, has been quite successful. This approach often fails with cocaine, marijuana, heroin or PCP dependence. One reason cocaine, marijuana, and PCP dependence is so much more difficult to treat than Alcoholism, is because these drugs alter brain chemistry.

The Biggest Mistake in Treatment of Drug Users

Drug users as well as his or her parents, teacher, drug free girlfriend, boyfriend get very excited when the user first quits. Most drug users, however relapse after being abstinent for about 10 to 16 weeks.. The first time for any jubilation after someone quits is when they have been abstinent for 120 days without a single drug usage. The second AJubilation point@ is 12 months clean. No one should be considered Asafe@ until they have been abstinent Afive years@. It is wise to have a Arelapse plan@ so a user will rapidly get off drugs when relapse occurs.

Facts about Marijuana as a medicine

No one would deny sick persons scientifically tested medicine, but smoking pot does not qualify as medicine. No medicine is smoked, in fact smoking causes lung cancer and other deadly diseases. Marijuana as a medicine is in part a cruel hoax on sick and dying people to gain support for those who seek to use drugs for selfish personal use.

Facts about Marijuana

The THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) - the high in pot. The content in to days marijuana can be 30%. In the 1970=s the THC content averaged only 3% - a 1000% potency increase. Crude marijuana contains over 2000 chemicals when lit with more carcinogens, in greater concentration than tobacco. Pot smoking among mothers has been linked to a ten times incidence of childhood leukemia. Marijuana tar applied to herpes and other STD cultures indicate pot makes these diseases break out more often in greater intensity. Think of what these effects may mean to cancer and AIDS sufferers.

Drunk Driving

In the past 10 years, more than 30,000 people have died and 750,000 people have been injured on Australian roads. One third of those killed were under 20 years of age. One out of every two road deaths, alcohol is a major factor. It effects drivers= judgement, vision, inhibitions and encourages drivers to become daring and aggressive and over-rate their ability to drive well.

A child who starts smoking at 12 years of age, compared with a child who starts smoking at 15 years of age, has five times more chance of getting lung cancer. It would appear that the younger the age of drug use, the worse the effect. More than 90-96% of lung cancers are directly attributable to smoking and could therefore have been avoided. Cannabis (Tetrahydrocannabinol) Big Killer on Roads

Cannabis is Queensland=s second biggest cause of drug-related road deaths behind alcohol, a new State Government study shows.

A joint Government Statistical Unit and Health Department study into drug-related deaths in Queensland between 1989 and 1992 found alcohol was involved in 519 road deaths while cannabis was present in 62 road deaths.

Health minister Mike Horan said the survey reinforced the State Government=s tough stand against marijuana. AIt is obvious from this survey that legalising marijuana would be the single worst thing we could do for the community,@ Mr Horan said.

Alcohol was responsible for 49.4 percent of all drug-related deaths in Queensland in the period, making it the State=s biggest drug killer. It was linked to 1623 deaths. Barbiturates and other sedatives were the second biggest drug killers, claiming 512 lives, or 15.6 percent of deaths.

Barbiturates and other sedatives were concentrated in suicides and cases of self-inflicted injury. These drugs were linked to 311 suicide or self-inflicted injury deaths behind only alcohol 597.

Morphine-type opiates were linked to 295 deaths or 9 percent of drug-related deaths, while cannabis contributed to 254 deaths or 7.7 percent of total drug-related deaths.

Antidepressants were linked to 244 deaths (7.4 percent) while the category of other drugs, which included prescribed drugs, contributed to 327 deaths or 10 percent of the total.

Only four deaths were attributed to cocaine.

Alcohol topped all death categories, including homicides, where it was linked to 110 deaths. Barbiturates were linked to 26 homicides: cannabis 19 and morphine-type opiates 10.

Almost half of the cannabis-linked deaths were people aged 15 to 24, while 35.4 percent of cannabis deaths were people aged 25 to 34.

Deaths linked to barbiturates and opiates peaked in the 25 to 44 age group.

Of alcohol-related road deaths, 61 people had blood alcohol concentrations of more than 0.25, five times the legal limit. In 74 cases the blood alcohol concentration was between 0.2 and 0.25.

Queensland reported 2284 drug-related deaths over the four years of the study.

Nope to Dope Say Our Doctors

The use of marijuana for medical purposes is not on the agenda for Queensland patients, according to Dr Dana Wainwright from the Australian Medical Association.

The AMA would not support the decriminalisation of the drug, despite claims by overseas medical experts that marijuana can alleviate symptoms of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and other disabling disorders.

Dr Wainwright, chair of The Cannabis Education Working Party, said there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the benefits of the drug.

AThe majority of claims for the medical use of marijuana are based on anecdotal evidence.@

Dr Wainwright said the AMA would support further research into the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. ABasically if the research can prove beyond doubt the drug=s effectiveness, we would relook at the situation. However at the moment we cannot justify its legalisation or decriminalisation on medical grounds. It is a dangerous drug and there are degrees of its potency. Recently introduced varieties contain up to 30 times the active ingredients found in the local plant which leads to one fundamental problem - what is the standard dosage?@

The AMA could not accept the use of marijuana for the obvious reason that as the medical profession condemns smoking, it could hardly accept treating patients which requires inhalation of smoke.

Mental Fuzziness Linked to Marijuana (Belmont, Mass.)

People who smoke marijuana heavily-at least two out of every three days-may have trouble paying attention and performing simple tasks even a day after going without the frug, a Massachusetts hospital study found.

Researchers compared 65 Boston-area college students who smoked at least 22 days a month with 64 similar students who smoked at most 9 days a month.

A day after going without the frug, the heavy marijuana users performed significantly worse on tasks that involved sustaining and shifting attention.

The ability to remember things newly learned did not differ significantly between the groups, the researchers reported in Wednesday=s issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Marijuana=s effects on thinking might result from drug residue in the brain, from drug withdrawal or from actual damage to the nervous system, said the study=s authors, Dr. Harrison Pope Jr. and Deborah Yurgelun-Todd of Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital.

Dutch Get Tough!

The Netherlands has admitted that its 20 year experiment in liberal drug laws has failed. Even advocates of relaxed drug laws admit that the system is open to abuse.

Lax drug laws have caused an influx of foreign drug addicts, flourishing organized crime, and a flow of drugs from the Netherlands to neighbouring countries. France has threatened to block the Schengen agreement on open borders.

Coffee shops, where cannabis is openly sold and consumed and heroin possession is tolerated, first appeared in the late 1970s. The number has spiralled in the early 1990s and now Amsterdam, a city of 700,000, has a coffee shop for every one thousand inhabitants.

In response to pressure from Dutch citizens, enraged neighbouring countries, and the demands of European Union partners, the Netherlands is about to tighten the world=s most liberal drugs policy.

Number of Drug Addicts Decreases in Singapore

Singapore officials are crediting a decrease in the number of addicts to tough law enforcement measures combined with more effective treatment programs. Senior Parliamentary Secretary Ho Peng Kee stated that 2,744 addicts were arrested during the first half of 1996, compare to 3,025 in the second half of 1995. According to Kee, the number of new addicts dropped sharply to 978 in 1995, from 1,341 in 1994 and the relapse rate had decreased as well.

More Potent Drug in Use

A dangerous new strain of marijuana called Skunk has surfaced in Sutherland Shire.

More than 30 drug users have been admitted to Sutherland Hospital=s psychiatric ward after using the potent heavy resin-type cannabis.

A hospital spokesman said the police drug squad has made preliminary inquiries with the hospital=s mental health crisis team.

Hospital general manager, Gerry Macdonald said Skunk was thought to originate from North Queensland and was much stronger than traditional cannabis.

AApparently, this new strain is a lot stronger,@ Mr Macdonald said.

AWhile normal marijuana might cause psychosis after several joints this new strain could induce psychosis after just one or two joints,@ he said.

ASufferers might hear voices or have severe paranoia. We=ve had a significantly increased case load but it is unclear whether they=re all from Skunk or from traditional marijuana.@

Southern Sydney Area Health Service drug and alcohol counsellor, Rosie Taranto said significant increases in hospital admissions was an indicator the cannabis was stronger than normal.

AAlthough marijuana is known to cause psychosis it is more unusual,@ she said.

AIf there have been a lot of hospital admissions it=s likely to be a stronger strain such as Skunk.@

AThis strain looks a bit different and has more of one of the active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). And if people are mixing other drugs with Skunk then the dangerous effects could increase further.@

Dutch Public Health Council Says >NO= To Medical Marijuana

A committee of the Dutch Public Health Council had advised the Minister of Health against medical marijuana. The committee states that after studying the literature of the last 25 years, it has come to the conclusion that there are insufficient facts justifying the medical use of marijuana and cannabinoids. The committee also says that doctors cannot take responsibility for a product without quality-control and with unknown concoction. This applies to smoking as well as to other ways of consumption like tea.

Seven Ways That Marijuana Can Kill

1. People driving motor vehicles under the influence of marijuana have caused many fatalities. Also, industrial accidents have resulted from people operating machinery under the influence of marijuana. Marijuana diminishes judgement, perception, and coordination, and causes many accidents.

2. People under the influence of marijuana have decreased inhibitions and may practice unsafe sex. There is an increased incidence of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in persons who use marijuana.

3. Persons who use marijuana and drink alcohol simultaneously tend to consume larger quantities of alcohol than they would ordinarily. Marijuana suppresses the vomiting reflex with the result that higher blood alcohol levels are attained. This can cause death due to alcohol toxicity or due to aspiration.

4. Marijuana is a major cause of depression, which in turn, is a major cause of suicide.

5. Marijuana smoking damages the lungs and makes AIDS-related pulmonary diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumocystis worse, often resulting in death.

6. Marijuana use speeds up the heart and alters blood pressure. This can cause fatal heart attacks, especially in the elderly, or in those with pre-existing cardiac disorders.

7. Marijuana decreases the function of white blood cells which fight infections. By depressing the immune system, marijuana can contribute to death particularly in persons with compromised immune systems.
