Some plain english web surfing advice with an emphasis on Australia

For credit card users, Visa Asia Pacific have some excellent info on their email fraud page.

Credit Cards

NEVER  reveal the last three numbers (123 in this example) on the reverse side of your credit card to ANYONE for ANY REASON UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY COMPLETING A SECURE ON-LINE ORDER FORM
Anyone knowing your credit card number AND  these numbers can authorise an online purchase which will be charged to your card.
The 1st four (0229 in this example) are simply the last four digits of your credit card number.

credit card reverse side

Only use these numbers when required for a secure ( https:// ) online purchase
If you make an online purchase and there is an error, normally you will be notified immediately by a popup message which will show where the error occurred,  NOT later by 'phone or email.
Note: credit card companies will sometimes contact you by 'phone if you've made a purchase which is exceptional ( eg. an unusually large amount compared to your regular spending pattern - yes they do monitor spending patterns, it's not "big brother" its just one of the consumer protection measures credit card companies use to prevent you being ripped off ).
Again, they will NOT ask you for the check digits on your card, as shown above. In the unlikely event that there is an error when the vendor tries to process your order they should simply ask you to confirm that you were in fact the purchaser, the details of your order and possibly the delivery address - nothing more.
If your order has reached the vendor, your credit card details  DO NOT require confirmation, remember fraudsters are smooth talkers. If the person insists ( possibly conveying a sense of urgency ) hang up, don't bother being polite, then 'phone the vendor yourself. If they still insist that you must confirm your credit card details, again hang up, 'phone your credit card company and tell them what has happened, chances are you have been dealing with an unscrupulous vendor.

If you're looking to arrange a mortgage or perhaps an equity loan through a broker,
make sure the broker is Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) accredited.
The MFAA code of conduct is quite strict and ensures that brokers with MFAA accreditation follow professional and ethical practices.
E-M-@-I-Loans is an excellent example of an MFAA accredited, independent broker.
